"Like a rat crossing the street, everyone wants to beat it."
Spurs fans created a graphic thanking all players (except Fox) for a remarkable season.

In this year's Finals, as the Spurs' starting point guard, Fox averaged only 12.8 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, with a pitiful shooting percentage of 34.3% and 25%.In contrast, Harper, the second overall pick in the 2025 draft, had an outstanding performance as a rookie, coming off the bench in all Finals games, averaging 18 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3 assists, with shooting percentages of 49.3% and 28%.

Even harder to accept is that Fox's max contract signed last summer—4 years, $228.6 million—is about to take effect, as follows:
2026-27 season: $51 million;
2027-28 season: $55.1 million;
2028-29 season: $59.2 million;
2029-30 season: $63.3 million.

Perhaps overwhelmed by the intense criticism, Fox, unable to bear the public pressure, was recently found to have unfollowed the Spurs' official account, fueling further speculation that he might part ways with the team this summer.

Some US media outlets couldn't hold back from offering advice,suggesting that the Spurs could send Fox to the Rockets in exchange for Durant, whose current contract expires in the summer of 2028, with the next two seasons paying $43.9 million and $46.1 million respectively.

Durant is already 37 years old, turning 38 this September, but he remains one of the league's most lethal scorers, at least more capable than Fox of stepping up. Last regular season, he averaged 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, shooting 52% from the field and hitting 2.4 three-pointers per game at a 41.3% rate.

To be fair, if the Spurs had Durant in this year's Finals, they would never have been easily defeated 1-4 by the Knicks.

However, the question is whether the Rockets would be willing to act as the "sucker" and take on Fox. They seem very willing to patiently wait for VanVleet to fully recover from a devastating right knee anterior cruciate ligament tear, keeping the starting point guard spot open for the 32-year-old veteran.
