According to the latest report from ESPN on July 27, sources close to James revealed that he has always greatly appreciated Embiid's talent and basketball IQ. However, like many others in the league, he had doubts about whether Embiid could maintain long-term health and durability.

Ultimately, James determined that the 76ers have the high-IQ players and elite talent he was seeking. He got along well with Bob Myers and new general manager Mike Gansey, and this positive rapport became a significant plus. James and Gansey go way back to their high school days in Ohio: in the 2001 Ohio Mr. Basketball voting, Gansey finished second only to James, and the two even trained together in Cleveland back then. Besides that, agent Rich Paul has maintained a long-standing good relationship with 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer, which also helped facilitate this signing.

During the recruitment process, Embiid and James engaged in multiple in-depth and meaningful conversations. In fact, as early as 2014, Embiid would often jokingly recruit James to come to Philadelphia. In 2018, James also considered joining the 76ers but ultimately chose to go to the Lakers.
