On May 8, 1945, when Germany formally announced its surrender throughout Europe, a German squad was still carrying out their guard duties at the Houldegen weather station on a distant Arctic island.
This group of 11 soldiers initially believed they would soon return home after the war to be with their loved ones. However, reality dealt them a harsh blow: their final orders were to destroy all classified documents and remain on the island awaiting further instructions. Their commander promised follow-up orders, but none ever arrived. Without supplies or support, they had to survive by hunting polar bears and seals on the ice, enduring loneliness and freezing conditions. As food grew scarce and resources dwindled, they had no choice but to send out a distress call.
The island’s location was extremely remote, making contact with the outside world difficult. With no other options, they sent an unencrypted radio distress signal to the Allies—former enemies they had battled on the battlefield. Eventually, the Norwegian military received their call and, driven by humanitarian reasons, decided to launch a rescue mission.
When the Norwegian warship broke through the ice and reached the island, the German soldiers surrendered without hesitation. Although Germany had been the aggressor in Norway’s invasion, at this moment, they were simply ordinary people suffering from war’s hardships. Innate human compassion transcended past hostilities. They then boarded the ship and left the cold, isolated island behind.
It’s worth noting that Germany deployed troops to some of the world’s most remote regions, officially to build weather stations for gathering meteorological data to support military operations. However, there are also claims that Germany sought to harness supernatural powers to fight their enemies, with rumors of secret Arctic facilities dedicated to researching mysterious forces.
Though the truth has been buried by the tides of history, now in the game "World of Warships," we have the chance to revisit the Arctic battlefields of World War II, relive those heroic conflicts, and perhaps uncover hidden traces of history from the battlefield data!
Coinciding with the release of "World of Warships" version 14.7 and the 80th anniversary of World War II’s victory, the developers designed a brand-new PVE storyline mode. In this mode, players follow the footsteps of M-class naval officer Robert Adams, revisiting real WWII battlefields including the “Arctic Convoy,” “Midnight Transport,” and “Ocean Offensive” operations!
Completing each operation allows players to advance the storyline and earn valuable rewards. After finishing all campaigns, players will receive the M-class commander Robert Adams with 10 skill points, the permanent "Triumphant Return" camouflage for the M-class tier 9 battleship Iowa, the “Underwater Explosion” enemy ship destruction effect, the “We Did It” badge, and a powerful M-class tier 8 cruiser Santiago for free!
Additionally, until January 2, 2026, players who log in daily and complete specific combat missions can earn up to 32,000 naval tokens. These tokens can be exchanged 1:1 for steel and credits, greatly aiding in opening containers or purchasing ships. Players can also get the M-class tier 9 destroyer Combat Johnny for free! Captains interested in this milestone event should hurry to claim their warships and credits/steel!
