Introduction: The S15 season is almost over, and nearly all players have been paying attention to the recent offseason. With the launch of the S15 World Championship theme song MV, a wave of mockery and criticism surged across the web. Before this, Riot was known as a music company since their theme songs' visuals were very engaging, sometimes surpassing the game's quality. However, this time they really messed up, resulting in the lowest-rated World Championship theme song ever, with visuals heavily criticized. In the LPL region, it seems only Uzi appears with a clear face shot, while the five-time champion and the one without a title share an awkward side glance.
Most players are highly interested in this year's S15 World Championship. After many years, LPL is hosting a major event on home soil and surely wants to present the best. But from what has been revealed so far, Riot's management has been less than ideal, and players are not optimistic about the tournament's start. The main issue is the LPL and LCK slots, where the two top teams were scheduled to face off in the opening match. Although the opener was thrilling, eliminating one top team immediately disappointed many fans, as both teams are valuable assets, and fans hoped to see them in later Swiss rounds.
As the tournament approaches, the official theme song MV was also released. Previously, the theme songs always generated high excitement, and some had to be revised due to player-related issues, causing delays until the day before the event. This time, the release left players completely disappointed, even being voted by netizens as the worst World Championship theme song ever. According to fan votes, the S15 MV scored only 2.6, whereas the previous lowest, from S14, scored 6.3. The highest score was for the S7 season's "Legends Never Die," regarded by many fans as a perfect score.
Many fans commented below that when the dragon appeared at the Bird’s Nest in S7, combined with the climax, the excitement was instant. No matter how impressive new songs are, that one remains League of Legends’ number one. Perhaps fans had too high expectations for LPL hosting again, leading to great disappointment. Many joked that S15’s song and MV are both poor, getting worse every year, and Riot is increasingly neglecting music. The MV starts with Sylas’ chains, making viewers think of S14’s finals top performance, but then it shows Caps, who occupies over half the MV screen time. Without context, one might think Caps was last season’s champion.
The biggest issue is that the tournament is held in the LPL region, yet the MV features only one Chinese player’s clear face shot, the retired AD player Uzi, who hasn't even been streaming recently. The side glance between the five-time champion and the one without a title, although generating buzz, is very awkward. Even Theshy, who took a year off after S14, is prominently featured in the MV. It seems the producers cared more about creating hype than the MV’s actual value. Ideally, this season’s MV should have focused on the reigning champion team’s journey.
Previously, Riot was praised as a music company, but now the quality is really poor. The theme song’s rhythm is okay, but the re-edited MV is hard for fans to accept. This S15 MV feels more like it belongs to S16, narrating the entire journey of the S15 World Championship. If Riot keeps going like this, it feels like League of Legends might be heading toward disbandment.
Dear viewers, what do you think about this situation?
