Cueist Duong Quoc Hoang secured a dramatic win against Japanese opponent Naoyuki Oi at the 2025 Men's 10-Ball World Championship.
On the evening of September 24th at Military Zone 7 Arena (Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam's top pool player Duong Quoc Hoang (Hoang Sao) defeated Naoyuki Oi – Japan's number one and Asia's third-ranked player – with a 2-1 score after a dramatic penalty shootout, securing his place in the round of 32 at the 2025 Men's 10-Ball World Championship.
The match was intense from the beginning. In the first set, Quoc Hoang lost 3-4 after missing the 8-ball. In the second set, energized by the enthusiastic crowd, he played confidently and won decisively 4-1, equalizing the score. In the third set, Hoang led 2-0 but made mistakes, allowing Oi to come back to 2-2 and then tie 3-3.

According to the rules, the two players entered a "shootout" round. Quoc Hoang successfully executed all four attempts, while Oi missed on his first, losing 2-4. With this win, Hoang advanced to the round of 32, and Oi dropped to the losers' bracket. After the victory, Hoang raised his cue to thank the fans and sighed with relief.
Meanwhile, Vietnam's Pham Phuong Nam lost 0-2 to Jeffrey De Luna (Philippines), moving to the losers' bracket to face Moritz Neuhausen (Germany). Top players like Ko Ping Yi, Shane Van Boening, and others all won to secure their spots in the round of 32.
In September 2025, Vietnam hosted the Men's 10-Ball World Championship for the first time – the 2025 Predator WPA Men's 10-Ball World Championship, held at Military Zone 7 Arena (Ho Chi Minh City) from September 17 to 28. The event featured 96 top players worldwide including Carlo Biado, Fedor Gorst, Joshua Filler, Shane Van Boening, Ko Pin Yi, with a total prize fund of 425,000 USD, where the champion receives 70,000 USD.
