At the 2025 Women's World 3-Cushion Carom Championship held in Spain, the beautiful female player Nguyễn Lê Liên Quỳnh made history by reaching the semifinals. Her convincing quarterfinal victory not only confirmed her status as the sole representative of Vietnam but also raised hopes for her first-ever world championship title.
Born in 1998 in Gia Lai, Liên Quỳnh grew up in Group 12, Yên Đỗ Ward, Pleiku City. She initially studied at the Aviation Academy but chose to quit school at the end of 2021 to follow her passion for 3-cushion carom billiards. This daring decision made her the first Vietnamese female player to compete in the PBA (Professional Billiards Association of Korea) women's LPBA league. Prior to this, Liên Quỳnh won the 2025 national 3-cushion carom championship, securing her entry to this prestigious tournament, which features 24 top players from South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Colombia.
The tournament was organized in a round-robin format in Group G with two strong competitors: Claudia Lalinde (Colombia, ranked 7th worldwide) and Estela Cardoso (Spain, national champion). In her opening match on September 23 against Cardoso, a rare error occurred when the referee misrecorded the score, unfairly deducting 2 points from Liên Quỳnh. Despite this, she demonstrated steel nerves to come back and win, making a strong impression.
Liên Quỳnh impressively advanced to the semifinals of the Women's World 3-Cushion Carom Championship
The pinnacle was the crucial match early on September 24 against Lalinde. Liên Quỳnh started impressively with a 4-point streak, leading 15-9 after the first inning. The second inning was dramatic as her opponent leveled the score at 22-22, but a decisive 3-point shot secured a 25-23 win, advancing her to the round of 16. The match was full of drama: during her scoring run, Liên Quỳnh accidentally hit the wrong cue ball for 3 points, but the referee failed to notice immediately and only stopped the game after a spectator pointed it out — the points were still counted. In the second inning, the referee wrongly penalized her for a time violation and reset the balls for Lalinde. This incident led UMB President Farouk Barki to intervene, review the case, cancel the penalty, and even replace the main referee. These events stirred the Vietnamese billiards community, with many criticizing the organization but also celebrating Liên Quỳnh's toughness.
Riding her winning streak, in the round of 16, Liên Quỳnh defeated Noriko Fukao from Japan. In the quarterfinals, the Vietnamese player continued her success by beating Claudia Chacon from Colombia. In the semifinals, Liên Quỳnh will face Dutch player Therese Klompenhouwer.
