Qatari owners could revive the takeover attempt of MU, Maguire pledges his future at Old Trafford,... these are the key Manchester United updates for 22/8.
Center-back Harry Maguire confirmed he received several offers during the summer transfer window but chose to stay with MU. Maguire stated the club rejected all bids for him and he wants to contribute long-term. The 32-year-old affirmed he will negotiate a new contract in the coming months:
“This is a fantastic club to represent, and it would be silly to want to leave as soon as possible.”
MU has triggered the contract extension option with Maguire until 2026, but without a new deal, he will be free to negotiate with clubs outside the Premier League from 1/1/2026.
MU has officially named Stephen Torpey as Academy Director, replacing Nick Cox, who will join Everton.
Torpey, who previously succeeded at Man City and Liverpool, is expected to elevate youth development, continuing the tradition of producing stars like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, and Marcus Rashford.
“This is a great time to join MU as the club embarks on an exciting new era,” Torpey said at his unveiling ceremony.
According to Daily Mail, due to a little-known clause, the Glazer family can sell their entire MU stake despite opposition from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
This news opens the possibility that Sheikh Jassim and the Qatari investment group may reactivate their MU acquisition plan. However, insiders reveal Qatar is currently less interested, focusing on other projects including hosting the 2036 Olympics.
Nonetheless, this development makes the MU ownership transfer market more active and unpredictable than ever.
After a 0-1 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League opener, coach Ruben Amorim faces harsh criticism. Former Everton boss Sean Dyche even mocked: “With the current squad, I believe I would win more games than Amorim.”
Since taking charge of MU, Amorim has won only 16 out of 43 matches, achieving a 37% win rate. Despite the club spending over £200 million in the summer on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, his high pressing style and three-center-back formation are still seen as ineffective.
Amorim’s future is under serious doubt, and if MU’s decline continues, a managerial change could definitely happen.
