It is said that Al Nassr is currently being put on the market by its Saudi investor.
According to journalist Ahmed Al-Ajlan, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which holds 75% stakes in four major clubs including Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli, is planning to sell its shares. This move comes as the Saudi Ministry of Sports aims to slow down spending in the Saudi Pro League.
PIF took control of the four top Saudi clubs in 2023, while the Ministry of Sports retained 25% ownership. With massive financial backing, the league quickly attracted superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez, along with renowned coaches. In the summer of 2023 alone, transfer fees reached nearly £750 million, demonstrating the ambition to establish the Saudi Pro League as a new powerhouse in world football.
However, since this summer, clubs have had to operate under strict financial regulations, leading to a significant reduction in spending. Currently, many private investors have shown interest in acquiring shares of these clubs. After a period of strong government support, the Saudi Pro League is expected to enter a new phase where private owners will take responsibility for maintaining the league’s appeal and quality.
This tightening decision was implemented right after Cristiano Ronaldo extended his contract with Al Nassr. At 40 years old, the Portuguese superstar signed a deal until 2027 worth approximately £492 million, considered the largest contract in football history.
Ronaldo arrived in the Middle East at the start of 2023 and immediately proved his value at Al Nassr. In 112 appearances across all competitions, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star scored 99 goals and provided 20 assists, showcasing his quick adaptation to the demanding environment in Saudi Arabia.
Nevertheless, CR7 has yet to lift a major trophy with Al Nassr despite several runner-up finishes in various competitions. Ronaldo now has another chance to win a title as Al Nassr has reached the final of the Arab Super Cup, where they will face Al Ahli.
