After finishing in 4th place at the 2025 AFF Women's Cup, coach Futoshi Ikeda was forced to step down from his position as Thailand's women's national team coach.
The Thailand women's team suffered another disappointing tournament, finishing 4th overall under coach Futoshi Ikeda. Notably, they lost twice to Vietnam in the group stage and the third-place match, as well as a defeat to Myanmar. These are familiar rivals in Southeast Asia, and Thailand had hoped to at least reach the final.
According to Ball Thai Stand, this poor performance led to Futoshi Ikeda's dismissal by the Football Association of Thailand. His likely successor is Nuengrutai Srathongvian, who currently coaches Thailand’s youth women's teams. Her task will be to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games at the end of 2025. Nuengrutai previously coached the senior women's team during 2014-2015 and 2017-2019, and also served as interim coach before Ikeda's arrival.
During her tenure with the Thailand women's national team, Nuengrutai Srathongvian's best achievement was leading the team to qualify for the 2025 Women's World Cup by defeating Vietnam. This was also the first time
The dismissal of coach Futoshi Ikeda was anticipated. The Thailand women's team has been going through a difficult and declining phase. Prior to the AFF Women's Cup, failing to qualify for the Asian Cup for the first time in 28 years was a major shock for Thai women's football. Although Ikeda faced criticism for questionable player selection decisions, the Football Association of Thailand still supported him until the conclusion of this AFF Women's Cup.
Futoshi Ikeda began his coaching career with Urawa Reds youth team in 1997. He made a significant impact leading Japan’s U20 women's team to win the 2017 AFC U19 Women's Championship and achieved a historic victory at the 2018 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup.
He also coached Japan’s U17 women's team at the 2018 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup. Most recently, he guided the Japan women's national team to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Women's World Cup and secured qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
