Before the major showdown with Man City, Coach Thomas Frank revealed Tottenham has set two strategic options. He stressed that adaptability in tactics will be crucial for Spurs to face the European title holders and pursue a favorable result.
Tottenham Hotspur started the 2025/26 Premier League season with great enthusiasm by defeating newly promoted Burnley 3-0, temporarily lifting spirits after the disappointment of losing to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup. This victory boosted the team's morale, but a much bigger challenge lies ahead against Manchester City.
One of the most discussed issues currently is Tottenham’s squad. After missing out on target Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, Spurs continue their search for attacking reinforcements, notably Savinho from Man City. However, for the upcoming direct confrontation with this very team, Coach Thomas Frank is focusing more on tactical flexibility.
In an interview with The Spurs Express, Frank shared that he has prepared two options simultaneously: “I always approach each match differently. In my mind, there is definitely a 3-5-2 plan, and also a 4-2-3-1. I will make a decision and you will see it tomorrow. I constantly ask myself how to adjust slightly based on my playing principles. Of course, formations can bring different elements, but the principles are the most important. Therefore, I will be pragmatic, ready to use multiple systems and approaches to win.”
In fact, during the win over Burnley, Tottenham lined up with a four-defender formation and the midfield trio of Sarr – Gray – Bergvall. Conversely, against PSG, Frank employed a three-man defense with Danso, Romero, and Van de Ven, along with wing-backs Spence and Porro. This change helped Spurs attack more fluidly while defending more solidly against strong opponents.
This tactical diversity is seen as a key for Tottenham in the new season. Facing Man City’s formidable attack featuring Haaland, Silva, Doku, and newcomer Reijnders, Frank will likely revert to a three-defender setup to strengthen the defense.
With a young, ambitious, and developing squad, Tottenham is expected to become a challenging and unpredictable team this season. The addition of quality new signings in the final days of the transfer window further clarifies Spurs’ goal of rising to a higher level.
