Brazilian center-back Matheus Santos made a mistake causing CATPHCM to suffer a penalty against The Cong Viettel on the night of August 22.
On the evening of August 22, CATPHCM club faced a harsh defeat after losing 0-3 to The Cong Viettel in the second round of the V-League. Among them, Brazilian center-back Matheus Santos had a forgettable day as he was the one responsible for the error that caused his team to concede the first penalty.
Specifically, in the 19th minute, from an accurate cross from the right wing by Truong Tien Anh, striker Lucao pressured Santos, who mishandled the ball and touched it with his hand inside the penalty area. After consulting VAR, the referee determined the 29-year-old defender committed an unnatural foul and awarded the home team a penalty. From the spot, Pedro accurately finished into the left corner, opening the scoring.
The early goal caused CA TPHCM to lose confidence. In the following minutes, the visiting defense repeatedly found themselves on the back foot. Matheus Santos, valued at around 1 million euros on Transfermarkt, often appeared slow in maneuvering, poorly positioned, and allowed opponents to get past him too easily.
Matheus Santos Felipe, standing 1.86m tall, plays as a center-back and is highly regarded for his aerial ability, game reading, and defensive organization. He began his career at smaller Brazilian clubs before gradually establishing himself at teams such as Centro Sportivo Alagoano, Ceará Sporting, Athletico Paranaense, and most recently Atlético Clube Goianiense, a club competing in Serie A (Brazil’s top league).
After the 0-3 defeat at Hang Day Stadium, CATPHCM temporarily dropped to 6th place on the standings. In the next round, coach Le Huynh Duc’s team will return home to Thong Nhat Stadium to host HAGL.
