In Manchester United’s opening match against Arsenal, one of the key highlights was the return of left-back Luke Shaw after a long injury layoff.

The 30-year-old star started the match in the lineup, replacing Lisandro Martinez who is still recovering from injury. Although he began somewhat hastily with an uncontrolled tackle, Shaw quickly regained composure and successfully shut down Bukayo Saka on the opponent’s right wing. This clearly demonstrates the value of the English defender whenever he is in peak physical condition.
According to Manchester Evening News, in the pre-match press conference before facing Fulham, coach Ruben Amorim expressed his satisfaction about Shaw: “He is a special player. When healthy, Shaw truly makes a difference for Manchester United. The most important thing is that he helps us achieve our goals, along with other experienced players like Mason Mount.”
Amorim’s praise is not exaggerated. In the 2020/21 season, Shaw was regarded by many experts as the best left-back in the world. Despite a career frequently interrupted by injuries, his quality is indisputable.
Shaw suffered a horrific leg break in 2015 and has had recurring muscle injuries in recent seasons. The peak was in 2023/24 when he was forced to play two games within four days right after recovering, leading to a relapse. Shaw himself admitted that it was a wrong decision by both himself and the medical team.
However, the 2024/25 season opens a new opportunity. Manchester United are no longer competing in European cups after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. This means they only focus on the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, a lighter schedule that reduces the risk of Shaw’s injury recurrence.
In the three-center-back system built by Ruben Amorim, Shaw is almost guaranteed the left flank spot if he maintains his form. Even when Lisandro Martinez returns from his knee injury, he will face fierce competition for a starting position. Additionally, young talent Ayden Heaven is also being considered, but Shaw’s experience and class remain a significant advantage.
