Coach Hansi Flick was once unhappy with Barca’s lack of intensity in the opening match. However, following the dramatic comeback against Levante, he couldn’t hide his pride in his players’ fighting spirit.
Barcelona staged a spectacular comeback to win 3-2 against Levante after trailing 0-2 in the first half. Despite Flick trying out Casado, Rashford, and positioning Raphinha as an attacking midfielder, Barca struggled against the five-man defense. In the second half, with Gavi and Dani Olmo coming on, the visitors scored two quick goals through Pedri and Ferran Torres, before Elgezabal’s own goal in stoppage time sealed a thrilling victory for Barca.
After the match, Flick expressed his pride: “We believed until the very last minute and secured all 3 points. It’s never easy when the opponent defends so deep, but this game helped us learn and continue improving. Levante defended very well and had fast players who troubled us.”
The goal by Pedri, who was considered the best player of the match, reignited Barcelona’s hopes after conceding the second goal just before halftime. This goal came from a penalty awarded after Morales fouled Balde, who had handled the ball inside the box. Referee Alejandro Hernandez, after consulting VAR, pointed to the spot despite a similar handball incident in the previous El Clasico not being penalized.
Flick showed his dissatisfaction: “You get frustrated with decisions like this. In my opinion, Balde’s handball wasn’t clear-cut. However, the referee analyzed and made the call. We have to accept it.”
Additionally, Flick praised Marcus Rashford in his first start since joining Barca on loan: “He demonstrated his quality. In the second half, I had to make changes and moved Raphinha back to the left wing. Luckily, Pedri’s goal came at the right moment.”
With this win, Barcelona maintains a perfect record (6 points from 2 matches) and asserts their strength in the La Liga title race this season.
