New signing Viktor Gyokeres shone brightly in Arsenal's 5-0 win against Leeds, revealing the motivation behind his distinctive celebration that caught fans' attention.
Joining Arsenal from Sporting CP for a significant transfer fee during the summer window, Viktor Gyokeres faced considerable pressure in his Premier League debut. In his first match against Manchester United, he was criticized for inefficiency and even mocked for repeatedly touching his hair 28 times throughout the 90 minutes.
However, in the home game against Leeds, the Swedish striker proved his worth by scoring a brace, playing a major role in Arsenal's emphatic 5-0 win. His first goal came from a well-coordinated team move, while the second was a precise penalty kick in stoppage time after Max Dowman was fouled inside the box.
Notably, after successfully converting the penalty in stoppage time following Max Dowman's foul in the penalty area, the Swedish forward celebrated in his usual manner. Then, he quickly stopped and touched his hair.
Speaking after the match with Sky Sports, Gyokeres expressed satisfaction: “Of course, I’m very happy with this result. Scoring two goals is great. There’s always pressure, but I knew sooner or later I would make the most of my chances. We won 5-0, it was a fantastic day.”
When asked if the celebration was a message to the fans, he replied: “Maybe, yes, exactly!”
The Swedish striker also admitted that his preparation was not perfect due to limited preseason training: “The important thing is that I played the full 90 minutes, regained my rhythm, and better understood the team’s style. I feel more comfortable now, and everyone can see that.”
Gyokeres praised his teammates: “We have many quality attacking players. My job is to be in the right place to seize opportunities.”
The win against Leeds means Arsenal have won their first two matches of the season, scoring six goals and keeping clean sheets. Nevertheless, Gyokeres emphasized that the team must not be complacent: “Every opponent wants to beat us. Therefore, Arsenal must prepare well for each game. We are on the right track but there is still room for improvement.”
