Fans of the "Red Devils" were stunned as Manchester United fell to Grimsby Town in the League Cup's second round.
Early this morning, Manchester United visited Blundell Park for their second-round League Cup match. Facing an opponent from League Two – the fourth tier of English football – Ruben Amorim's squad was expected to comfortably advance.
However, the game unfolded in a completely unexpected way. Two costly mistakes by goalkeeper Andre Onana in the first half allowed Grimsby to take a 2-0 lead. It wasn't until the second half that Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scored to level the match at 2-2, sending the game into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
During the penalty shootout, both teams engaged in a rare marathon, taking 23 shots each. Ultimately, Grimsby triumphed 12-11, while Man Utd was knocked out as early as round two – a shocking outcome for a Premier League giant.
This defeat quickly ignited a wave of outrage among Red Devils fans. Many supporters openly expressed despair, suggesting the club is "cursed" and questioning Coach Amorim's capabilities.
One user named Red Devils Vibes wrote: “I’m desperate. Someone has cursed us.” Another commented: “This club is as lost as their manager.”
Criticism also targeted Amorim’s tactics. A fan named Olamide said: “If anyone knows Amorim personally, please tell him to change his formation. Even Real Madrid frequently adjusts theirs.”
Some even claimed that former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would perform better with the current squad. “After only three matches, United now only have the FA Cup left. This season will be long. No one can convince me Solskjaer wouldn’t do better than Amorim,” commented user Carin Cat.
Meanwhile, another fan sarcastically remarked: “Being 2-0 down to Grimsby is humiliating, especially after spending £200 million on a new attack.”
Clearly, this humiliating loss to a fourth-tier team not only knocked Man Utd out of the League Cup but also piled enormous pressure on Coach Ruben Amorim at the very start of the season.
