With just four days remaining in the summer transfer window, Manchester United has not sold any players so far. Rashford is the only one leaving, loaned to Barcelona for free with only a purchase option attached, so he may come back later. Numerous Red Devils have opted to remain, particularly the goalkeepers. André Onana has done so, and now 27-year-old Turkish keeper Altay Bayindir is also making the same choice.
According to "Turkish Football," Bayindir turned down the chance to join Turkish Super League champions Galatasaray. Although the club will participate in the Champions League, after starting in the first two rounds of the Premier League, Bayindir saw hope and decided to stay at Old Trafford to compete for the number one goalkeeper spot. Even though he was benched in the second round of the League Cup, Onana, who started, made mistakes, so the Turkish goalkeeper believes he still has a chance.
At Manchester United, Bayindir earns a weekly salary of £80,000, which he would definitely lose if he transferred away. If he stays and can play as the main goalkeeper, it naturally beats returning to play in the Turkish Super League. Although United is about to sign the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper prospect Senna Ramses, Bayindir still feels confident in his competitiveness.
Especially between late December this year and early January next year, Onana will be away for the Africa Cup of Nations, missing at least half a month. Bayindir is confident he can outperform the newly arrived Ramses and get more playing time. The club's attitude helped the player make up his mind; they are unwilling to force current players out and plan to keep all existing goalkeepers.
Therefore, Bayindir firmly chooses to remain at Manchester United, believing he can surpass Onana and any potential new signings to secure a long-term future at the club.
This summer, after parting ways with Fernando Muslera, Galatasaray plans to strengthen their goalkeeper lineup before the transfer window closes. Several candidates, including Manchester City's Ederson, have been linked with the club, and they even tried to "steal" Ramses. However, United's progress in signing Ramses is quite advanced. Transfer expert Christopher Mitchell said the club's executives are very optimistic about completing the deal within the next two days. This means the Red Devils want Ramses to debut at Old Trafford in their next Premier League home game against Burnley.
However, former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster expressed serious doubts about Ramses' ability to adapt immediately to the Premier League. "I've watched some of his highlights, and he looks decent. But I still don't think he's the answer. He seems like a good young goalkeeper, but expecting a player from Antwerp to instantly become a world-class keeper in the Premier League — if that happens, it would be a miracle!"
Foster believes Bayindir is weak at defending set-pieces and shouldn't be United's long-term first-choice goalkeeper. "I think everyone would agree Bayindir isn't the best option. I feel he was lucky not to concede on several corner kicks against Fulham. Whenever opponents deliver the ball into the box, especially over Bayindir's head, there's a chance they can score against him."
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also commented: "Ramses lacks experience; he might provide squad depth rather than immediate starting opportunities. Should United look for a new signing to stabilize the goalkeeper position, or do they trust the current competition between Bayindir and Onana for the number one spot? As a defender, I know uncertainty behind you can cause panic. If the team wants success and stability, that can't happen."
Ferdinand thinks being a goalkeeper at Manchester United is very challenging. "When I joined United, Barthez was still there, and before him was Schmeichel. Even though Barthez had won the World Cup, he still struggled to adapt at United. This role is tough," he explained. "We bought Tim Howard, Roy Carroll, Kuszczak, Ricardo in succession until Edwin (van der Sar) arrived. Edwin was experienced, won many honors, and became one of United's greatest goalkeepers. But that shows this position is not easy to fill."
