Tottenham unveils a new 'number 10' following a series of transfer market setbacks

Tottenham has finalized a significant signing by successfully recruiting Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, adding notable strength to head coach Thomas Frank’s squad.

Xavi Simons officially joins Tottenham

After a summer spent striving to find a top-class attacking midfielder, including unsuccessful attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) and Eberechi Eze (who was outbid by Arsenal from Crystal Palace), securing 22-year-old Xavi Simons is seen as a major triumph for Spurs.

The Dutch player joins Tottenham under a contract valued at €60 million (£51.8 million). He signed a five-year deal with an option to extend for two more years. Leipzig retains a sell-on clause for any future transfer of Simons.

"I am very happy and can’t wait to get started. I have dreamed about this for a long time," Simons told the club’s official website. "This is a fantastic club. When I met the head coach, I immediately knew this was the right place for me. I will bring creativity, but also discipline and a fighting spirit for the team and the fans."

Xavi Simons debuts at Tottenham

Simons, a former product of the renowned La Masia academy, moved to PSG in 2019 and truly flourished during his loan spell at PSV in the 2022/23 season, scoring 22 goals. Over two seasons at Leipzig, he added 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 matches before being permanently signed earlier this year.

Due to Leipzig’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, they were willing to sell Simons at a high price. Tottenham quickly re-entered the race after ending talks with Man City over Savinho. Simons was allowed to fly to London on Thursday to finalize the deal, although Chelsea quietly monitored the transfer.

Reports revealed Chelsea was once a possible destination, but because they couldn’t offload excess players, they had to withdraw, allowing Spurs to succeed in this deal.

Simons completed his medical on Friday morning and was officially announced that afternoon after coach Frank declined to confirm the transfer during the 2:30 pm press conference.

The Dutch newcomer will make his debut before the weekend match against Bournemouth and will wear the number 7 jersey — previously worn by former captain Son Heung-min. Thanks to his versatility, Simons can play on the left wing, right wing, or as a number 10, offering coach Frank many options amid the long-term injury of James Maddison.
