Coach Ruben Amorim confirms he will not abandon the 3-4-3 formation, despite a poor start with Manchester United and a historic defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.
Manchester United is going through a tough period under Ruben Amorim’s leadership. After the first two rounds of the Premier League, the Red Devils have yet to secure a win and were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, a team from the fourth division. This is considered one of the most humiliating defeats in the club’s history.
However, Amorim remains committed to the philosophy he has applied throughout his coaching career, the 3-4-3 system. Speaking at a press conference before the upcoming match against Burnley this weekend, the Portuguese strategist emphasized:
"I was asked before coming here: Can you play with this system? I answered: I will play with my system, no matter what. If you all agree, great, but if one day I wake up and feel the need to change, I will. I only change when I truly believe in it, not out of confusion. If I don’t believe in what I say, the players won’t either. So, the issue is not the system. We lost to Grimsby not because of the 3-4-3."
In Premier League history, Antonio Conte is the only coach who has won a title using the 3-4-3 formation. Other names like Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) and Vitor Pereira (Wolves) have also had some success. However, this number remains very small compared to other popular formations.
So far, Amorim has only won 7 out of 29 matches in the Premier League, a statistic that has shaken fan confidence. Nevertheless, the Portuguese coach stresses that this philosophy can be flexible and adaptable:
"I have played 4-4-2, 4-3-3 but never a single minute in 3-4-3. The key is to master one system well, then adapt to every opponent. Once the players are proficient, we can tweak details to create differences."
After the Grimsby defeat, Amorim himself admitted: "Something needs to change and you can’t replace all 22 players." However, he confirmed he will not step down: "I don’t know what the future holds, but for now, I am still the Manchester United coach and I believe that will not change."
In the third round of the Premier League, Manchester United will host Burnley at Old Trafford at 21:00 on August 30 (Vietnam time).
