Coach Ruben Amorim has shared his thoughts regarding his future following the defeat against Grimsby Town.
Pressure is mounting heavily on Ruben Amorim as Manchester United continues to disappoint early in the season. After the shocking elimination from the English League Cup by Grimsby Town, a club competing in England’s fourth tier, the Portuguese manager admitted he is uncertain about his position after the international break.
Manchester United has earned only 1 point from the first two Premier League matches and currently sits as low as 16th in the standings. Ahead of the crucial match against Burnley, considered a must-win to salvage the situation, Amorim’s future remains highly uncertain. When asked about his chances of continuing to lead the team after the international break, he responded candidly: “I don’t know what will happen. I cannot promise anything about the future, but right now, I am still the manager of Manchester United and I believe that hasn’t changed.”
This statement has deepened public doubts, especially since Amorim previously made controversial remarks after the loss at Blundell Park. He described his players’ poor performance as a “clear message” about what they really want. Many believe this indicates that the Man Utd dressing room has lost faith in him after only 9 months in charge.
However, the 40-year-old coach later clarified that those words were said in the heat of the moment and should not be taken literally. Amorim admitted: “Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love them; sometimes I want to protect them, other times I feel like giving up. Sometimes I think I want to stay here for 20 years, other times I don’t want to continue at all. That’s how I work. At that moment, I was very disappointed and angry. I know many experienced players advised me to stay calm, but I have always been true to myself.”
He also explained that his emotional outburst stemmed from the gap between expectations and reality: “I felt we had a very good pre-season preparation period. But then we played poorly for 30 minutes against Fulham and continued to disappoint. That made me extremely frustrated with everything.”
Once a coach expected to revive Manchester United, Amorim is now struggling to hold onto his position at Old Trafford. The match against Burnley could be a decisive turning point for his fate. If Man Utd continues to slide, the club’s leadership may lose patience, and Amorim himself has acknowledged he cannot guarantee anything about his future.
