Manchester United just secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Burnley, but the team's joy was nearly overshadowed by an injury to striker Matheus Cunha. However, the latest post-match images have reassured Red Devils fans.
The Red Devils earned their first win of the season against newcomers Burnley, thanks to Bruno Fernandes' decisive goal in stoppage time. Earlier, Ruben Amorim’s squad had twice been pegged back following an own goal by Josh Cullen and a strike from Jaidon Anthony.
Nonetheless, the victory was somewhat dimmed when Cunha suddenly limped off in the 31st minute of the first half. The Brazilian forward appeared to have a hamstring problem and was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee. His walk directly to the tunnel caused many fans to worry about a long-term injury.
After the match, coach Ruben Amorim admitted his concern when losing both Cunha and Mason Mount simultaneously. He stated: “It's tough to lose a player like Cunha and also Mason Mount, who had to push through nearly 30 minutes while injured. I’m not sure if this is a long-term issue, but I’m genuinely worried. They are both very important to us, so we need to wait and see.”
However, shortly after the game ended, images of Cunha leaving Old Trafford brought great relief. The 25-year-old striker appeared with a completely normal gait, without crutches or any support devices. A video circulating on social media showed him smiling and chatting comfortably with fans in the parking lot, easing concerns about a serious injury.
This is especially important as Cunha was recently named by coach Carlo Ancelotti in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in South America. The Selecao will face Chile on September 5th and Bolivia on September 10th. If his condition remains stable, Cunha is likely to participate.
For Man Utd, this positive sign is a huge relief. In just two weeks, the Red Devils will face a crucial Manchester derby against Man City. Cunha’s timely return not only strengthens their attack but also provides coach Amorim with more tactical options during this key phase of the season.
