Two Manchester United players might still leave this month! Reasons revealed for no midfield signings, special plans to keep the new rising star

Despite the Premier League’s transfer deadline passing, Tyrell Malacia and Sam Mather may still exit Manchester United since various leagues in Asia and Europe continue to accept player registrations.

The Turkish Super Lig and the Saudi Professional League are potential options for Malacia. The 26-year-old Dutch full-back is the only member of the "five mice" who has yet to secure a move. He previously negotiated a season-long loan with La Liga newcomer Elche, but the deal collapsed before the deadline. Before Elche showed interest, Malacia was also linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia.

According to the British Daily Mail, if Malacia ultimately fails to find a new club, he will be recalled to the first team by Amourin. However, whether he will get playing time is uncertain, as the squad already includes Patrick Doğu and Diego León, with Diogo Dalot and Mazraoui also capable of playing as left wing-backs. Notably, Dalot provided an assist to Mbembo in the match against Burnley.

Manchester United academy graduate Mather also has prospects of moving to Turkey. Last week, the Manchester Evening News reported that the winger has attracted interest from clubs in Germany, Sweden, and Turkey. The 20-year-old was part of United’s 2022 FA Youth Cup-winning squad. The club hopes to arrange a permanent transfer but may agree to a loan deal with a purchase obligation.

Additionally, following Sena Lamens’ arrival, it remains to be seen whether André Onana or Altay Bayındır will depart. Sources close to Onana insist the 29-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper will stay, but Lamens’ signing and Ruben Amorin’s early-season choice to start Bayındır could alter those plans. Onana was previously strongly linked with moves to Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Including Lamens, Manchester United spent over £200 million in the 2025 summer transfer window but failed to sign any new midfielders. The Red Devils were closely linked with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Walton, but their high prices—ranging from £80 million to nearly £100 million—led the club to pass on both, a decision that puzzled many fans.

An insider at Manchester United explained to the Manchester Evening News that midfielders were never the club’s top priority because they believe their current squad already has enough strong options.

At present, Amorin’s midfield options include captain Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Ugarte, Cody Meno, and Mason Mount. Of these, Bruno Fernandes and Mount are considered more suited to attacking midfield roles, leaving only three true central midfielders.

This season, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have started all three Premier League matches. Although the 33-year-old Casemiro was once rumored to be on the way out, he chose to stay and remains the most balanced midfielder in attack and defense, albeit his stamina and physicality no longer allow him to endure a full 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Twenty-year-old Meno has yet to start any matches this season and has underperformed, but Manchester United rejected his request for a loan move. Before the Burnley game, Amorin stated he wants Meno to stay and fight for his chance. According to sources speaking to "TEAMtalk," the club is committed to fully supporting Meno’s efforts to redeem himself.

At the final moment of the summer window, Meno received inquiries from 10 to 15 clubs. Before the January winter transfer window opens, he will reassess his situation. Manchester United hopes he will sign a new contract then. Sources insist that as long as Meno faces the challenge and proves himself through his actions, the club is willing to renew his contract, which currently runs until 2027.

Meno is one of the club’s lower earners, making about £30,000 per week. Both he and his agent are unhappy and doubt Amorin’s 3-4-3 system offers him a realistic chance to become a regular starter. However, after being forced to stay, Meno has agreed to work hard to impress the coach. The young United star knows he must play more to be selected by Tuchel for England’s squad at next year’s World Cup.

Sources emphasize that Amorin will give Meno good opportunities and has devised a long-term plan for him. Yet the 40-year-old Portuguese coach has a preferred midfield profile that Meno currently does not fit.

The club itself is the main party reluctant to let Meno go, fearing it would weaken their midfield strength. If he transfers to another Premier League club, it could also strengthen a rival. Now, they want to see Meno focus on hard work to win over the manager, while Amorin needs to give him more playing time. With the team out of the League Cup, the rest of 2025 will only feature Premier League matches, which are relatively few in number.
