United have conceded three goals from set-pieces, or corners to be precise, in their last two games, and as Ruben Amorim has said, this issue must be resolved as soon as possible. 'When we talk about set-pieces, I think it's probably too analytical, too detail-oriented, and it results in a blue face. At the end of the day, you have to take the initiative, get the point and touch the ball first. United didn't do enough today." Former Manchester United centre-back Phil Jones analyzed.
Jones was the commentator after retiring from football, and his analysis of Nottingham Forest's first goal was simple and accurate. Manchester United were scored by Nottingham Forest and Arsenal in three corners, but did not grab the first place, Manchester United had a warm-up at the Emirates Stadium to practice headers to clear corners, but did not do it in actual combat.
The team was not organized and communicated enough. Left wing-back Diogu Darlow and centre-back De Ligt excelled in their headers, but they were in a useless position to defend the area, with Lisandro Martinez, who is only 1.7m, keeping a target against Nicola Milenkovic, who is 1.95m, and Manuel Ugarte, who is 1.82m, and Chris Wood, who is 1.91m. With such a big difference in height, it was no surprise that Forest's tall players rushed up and scored with a header.
Arsenal's 2-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium saw both goals coming from corners. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka's passes were deadly, but those goals could and should also be avoided.
Only Wolves and Southampton have conceded more goals from set-pieces than Manchester United this season, and this is clearly something that Amorim's coaching staff will need to work on to improve. Otherwise, United would have exposed a weakness that other teams are bound to attack. Amorim must step up his defence from corners to prevent another problem.
Andreas Georgesson was appointed Manchester United's set-piece coach this summer, with Ten Hag able to stay in the role after his departure. However, British media revealed that Amorim's confidant Carlos Fernandez has taken over the work of set-piece coach. Asked about the change, Amorim clarified: "The idea is to have Carlos [Fernandez] in charge of set-pieces and different things, with Andreas [Georgesen] also there to help. That's it, here's why."
In other words, with two people in charge of attacking and defending set-pieces, there is no reason why United should be one of the worst teams in the league to defend set-pieces. It's a pity that no matter how many coaches there are, the defense has to be done by the players. They need to be responsible and need to show more fighting spirit and aggression to improve their set-piece record.
Penalty awareness can't be gained through training, and sometimes header dominance is innate. A large number of United players are not good at heading and scrambling, including the likes of tall Marcus Rashford, Hojlund and Zilkze, while Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Kobe Mayno are also eye-to-eye defenders when it comes to headers. Lenny Yoro is thin and unfit for the Premier League, while Ugarte tackles sharply but his header is not his specialty. The same goes for Lima, whose height is a hard injury.
Moreover, the 26-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries for the past year and a half, has not been able to return to the level he was before the metatarsal injury, and he also has responsibility for Forest's third goal. Not only defensively, compared to the 2022/23 season, the Argentina international averaged two fewer long pass attempts per game, while the number of lateral and backward passes increased, suggesting a drop in his confidence.
As a result, Amorim may have to keep his eyes on Maguire. United's best player to defend corners was Harry Maguire, who was very effective in the air and it made sense to have him back in the starting line-up at a time when set-pieces were a big problem. Against Forest, Amorim replaced De Ligt with Harry Maguire in the 60th minute to strengthen the physicality of the defence.
'We brought Harry [Maguire] on because of set-pieces, to control the first point better. Amorim explained: "The only way to attack Nottingham is to transition between attack and defence, to try to win the first and second spots. When Harry was on the pitch, he snatched all the first spots."
Harry Maguire may be a hole in the back four for his turn and pace, but a central defender of three is less of a problem, and instead his headers and passes may be more useful. Maguire was a bit forgotten after his injury absence, but he was in good form before the injury and deserved to be given a chance, especially when the team struggled from set-pieces. He wasn't the best choice for United to start, but he was more trustworthy when it came to battle. Of course, relying on a "big head" alone is not enough to cure the problem, and he was powerless on the field to recover from the corner kick he conceded against Arsenal.
