Manchester United completed a last-minute £21.7 million signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senna Ramens on the summer deadline day, with the club confirming the 23-year-old will don the number 31 jersey. He is the fourth goalkeeper in the club’s history to wear number 31, after Jack Butland, Martin Dúbravka, and Nick Pope, who were all clear backup keepers. Ramens hopes to change that narrative.
It is reported that Ramens chose number 31 because the Premier League generally discourages squad numbers above 50, except for youth players promoted to the first team. Therefore, Ramens did not continue wearing his number 91 jersey from Royal Antwerp and Club Brugge.
Manchester United currently has many vacant numbers, including 14, 17, and 20. However, Ramens chose number 31 to honor his fellow Belgian Marouane Fellaini, who wore this number when he joined United but later switched to 27 out of respect for German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger. Other notable players who wore number 31 at United include the defensive midfielder Nemanja Matić.
According to the British Daily Mail, Aston Villa offered a higher transfer fee than Manchester United, but Ramens decided to join United. When asked why he chose Manchester United, the young goalkeeper said he had a childhood dream.
Ramens said: "This is a transfer I’ve dreamed about. When I was five, Manchester United was at its peak, and you remember the greatness of the club. So when I heard they were interested in me, it felt like a childhood dream coming true. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and the Premier League is the biggest league globally. When I was a kid, Manchester United won the Champions League and league titles, and I want to help the team get back to a level where they can compete for titles again and play in the Champions League again. That’s one of my biggest wishes, to grow with the team and reach the heights that once belonged to United."
Ramens expressed his excitement about playing at Old Trafford: "It’s largely about the stadium. You can feel it, see it, and witness its history. If a stadium is like that and has seen many legends over the past years and decades, I think when you walk in, you almost feel it. So that’s something I’m really looking forward to, stepping onto the pitch for the first time and thinking about all the great players who have played there, especially the goalkeepers."
Interestingly, when Ramens appeared for the first time at Old Trafford for photos, many Manchester United fans were stunned by what they saw because his agent bears a striking resemblance to the club’s former manager Ten Hag!
Although Ten Hag was recently dismissed by Bayer Leverkusen, he has not changed careers. Ramens’ agent is relatively unknown; his agency, "PROFI-MANAGEMENT," is a small Belgian company founded this year, and Ramens is their top star.
The British Daily Mail reports that other Premier League clubs also scouted Ramens last season, including Sunderland and Leeds United, but these clubs doubted his ability to adapt to the Premier League. Manchester United took the risk of signing him instead of buying the more experienced Emiliano Martínez.
The Premier League tests goalkeepers extensively in athleticism, mental toughness, fitness, and technique, more so than most other leagues. Although English scouts saw Ramens’ potential, they believed starting him immediately as a Premier League goalkeeper was risky. Of course, whether Ramens will start for Manchester United right away remains to be seen.
Ramens was not selected for Roberto Martínez’s Belgium squad, so he can now train at Carrington and work to integrate into his new environment quickly.
The Manchester Evening News reports that during the international break, Amourin will provide extra training sessions for 10 first-team members, including Ramens, Tom Heaton, Mazraoui, Diego Léo, Luke Shaw, Maguire, Tyler Fredrickson, Kobe Meno, and Zirkzee. Kunia, Mason Mount, and Lisandro Martínez are injured and unable to train normally.
Although Manchester United has not disclosed whether Ramens will be the starting goalkeeper, the new signing is ready to face the challenge. After the international break, United faces tough matches against teams like Manchester City and Chelsea.
