Coach Erik ten Hag receives an astonishing severance package after just 60 days on the job

Recent reports have revealed the compensation awarded to Coach Erik ten Hag following his dismissal by Bayer Leverkusen. The amount the Dutch manager received is truly shocking.

According to Germany’s BILD newspaper, Erik ten Hag will receive a contract payout of up to 6 million euros after being fired by Bayer Leverkusen, despite only working at BayArena for a mere 60 days. This means that the Dutch coach effectively “pockets” around 100,000 euros per day, a sum that has left many European football fans stunned.

Ten Hag was appointed as Leverkusen’s head coach in July, succeeding Xabi Alonso, who moved on to manage Real Madrid after the 2024/25 season. Leverkusen’s management hoped the former Manchester United coach would help the club maintain its competitive edge in the Bundesliga, especially after winning the 2024/25 Bundesliga title.

However, Ten Hag’s tenure at BayArena quickly collapsed. After just three official matches, including two Bundesliga games, Leverkusen’s leadership judged the 54-year-old coach “was steering the club in the wrong direction”. Sporting director Simon Rolfes personally announced the decision to terminate the contract after just over two months on the job.

One major reason for Ten Hag’s dismissal was a conflict over transfer policy. According to Bild, the signing of Lucas Vázquez, a former Real Madrid player, was completed by Leverkusen without Ten Hag’s approval. The Dutch coach only learned about the transfer after the player had passed the medical exam, causing a serious rift between the two sides.

Despite the early departure, Ten Hag still received the full 6 million euro severance due to a clause in his contract. This figure sparked debate since the 54-year-old worked only 60 days, averaging about 3 billion VND per day, an “ideal” salary for many top European coaches.

Currently, Leverkusen is urgently searching for a new head coach to replace him. Meanwhile, Ten Hag has yet to make an official statement regarding his dismissal.
