Chelsea faces difficulties with an insecure defense after Colwill’s injury and is expected to re-enter the winter transfer window with Juventus defender Bremer as their target.
Levi Colwill’s cruciate ligament injury prompted coach Enzo Maresca to quickly express the need for an additional center-back at Chelsea. However, the club’s management trusted the current squad and declined to engage in the summer transfer market. Yet, just over a month into the season, that confidence appears to have been misplaced.
Chelsea’s defense has shown instability, often making mistakes that lead to unfavorable results. One reason given for not acquiring another center-back is the development of Josh Acheampong. However, this young talent has only appeared once this season, which is insufficient to fill the defensive gap.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, journalist Simon Phillips revealed that Bremer, the Brazilian center-back from Juventus, has caught Chelsea’s attention. The London club is considering making an offer during the January 2026 transfer window. Juventus reportedly does not want to part with the Brazilian, but Chelsea is likely to test the waters with an attractive proposal.
Bremer was already on Chelsea’s watchlist while playing for Torino before his transfer to Juventus for around £45 million. Since then, he has become a key defensive figure for the “Old Lady” whenever fit. However, Bremer’s career has also been interrupted multiple times by injuries, including the recent cruciate ligament injury from which he has just recovered.
If Chelsea is determined to pursue Bremer, they must accept a significant risk. Their current squad already includes players frequently troubled by fitness issues, such as Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana. Adding a talented center-back who carries injury risks will require careful consideration from Chelsea’s management.
With the defense consistently under scrutiny, Chelsea faces considerable pressure. Without promptly addressing personnel issues, the path back to the top-four contention for “The Blues” will be full of challenges.
