It is certain that Manchester United will acquire a new midfielder in the January transfer window next year. Additionally, Rúben Amorim reportedly wants to secure a new right wing-back then, with the club’s transfer team actively scouting potential players.
At present, United’s right-backs Diogo Dalot and Mazraoui are accustomed to a back four system and cannot completely fulfill Amorim’s requirements for the 3-4-3 formation. Amorim’s tactics place great emphasis on wing-backs, who must be capable of both attacking and defending, demonstrate excellent stamina, maintain solid defense, and contribute assists or even goals.
Amorim once hoped that 23-year-old Ivorian winger Amad Diallo could play as a right wing-back, similar to his prized player Giovanni Quintero at Sporting CP. Unfortunately, the €40 million signing seems ill-suited for this role. Moreover, since Amad and the number 10 Mbeumo are both left-footed, Amad playing right wing-back lacks the ability to stretch the opposition’s defense by cutting inside. As a result, Amad faces a high risk of losing favor and becoming a substitute.
Off the pitch, Amad has also faced controversy. After Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea, he swapped jerseys with former teammate Garnacho and publicly shared it on social media, triggering online abuse. The club has expressed support for him. Garnacho, having openly clashed with Amorim, drew fans’ disapproval during the summer transfer window and was frequently booed and even verbally abused by spectators during the Red Devils vs Blues matches.
However, Amad and Garnacho share the same agent and both joined the club in 2020, maintaining a good relationship in the United dressing room. This summer, when asked about Garnacho, Amad publicly expressed his hope that Garnacho would stay, even though the Argentine winger had already fallen out with Amorim.
After facing harsh criticism online, Amad deleted all his social media posts, and Manchester United staff have been monitoring his situation. The club’s management acknowledged that posting such content on social media was somewhat inappropriate and immature, but emphasized that players should not be subjected to insults. They stressed that Amad is currently in a good state. United believes the Ivorian player has the mental strength to endure hardships, given his difficult upbringing.
According to "TEAMtalk," Manchester United has agreed to back Amorim’s efforts to bring in new players to strengthen the squad and boost competition. However, right-back signings will only happen if the deal terms are suitable, with midfield reinforcements remaining the top priority.
Sources say the club may act to strengthen the wing-back positions if the right targets emerge. The transfer team constantly evaluates the balance of Amorim’s squad and recognizes that adding another option on the flanks could benefit his system.
Currently, no specific candidates have been identified, and the screening process for realistic options is ongoing. United’s executives want to ensure that any upcoming transfer is sound both financially and tactically. They will avoid panic buys, but the plan to add another right-sided player this season has strong backing.
By next summer’s transfer window, it is almost certain that this position will receive further attention, with a wider pool of players available since many are reluctant to move mid-season. Bringing in a new right wing-back early would provide Amorim with additional tactical flexibility and help accelerate the rebuilding process.
Italian media reports that Manchester United have scouted Inter Milan’s wing-back Federico Dimarco. Interestingly, although the 27-year-old Italian can play as a wing-back, he is a left wing-back! United currently has several left-backs, including Patrick Dogu and Diego Léo, both brought in by Amorim himself. However, the most experienced player, Luke Shaw, may leave next year.
"Il Napolista" states that Dimarco is a target for Manchester United. He regularly plays as a left wing-back in Inter’s 3-5-2 formation. With his contract expiring in 2027, Inter might not block his transfer. Amorim reportedly highly values this player’s technical skills and shooting ability.
