Saliba has signed a new contract with Arsenal, but the happiness at Emirates becomes a source of anxiety for Liverpool. Real Madrid is now shifting its focus towards Konate.
William Saliba’s decision to renew his contract with Arsenal not only reassures coach Mikel Arteta but may also complicate Liverpool's efforts to retain defender Ibrahima Konate amid growing interest from Real Madrid.
According to sources from Caught Offside, Real Madrid has long considered Saliba a top defensive target, especially after scouts attended his performance at Emirates against Manchester City last weekend. President Florentino Perez views the French star as a long-term solution as both David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger approach contract expiration, while new signing Dean Huijsen is seen only as an initial reinforcement.
However, the situation quickly changed when Arsenal secured Saliba on a five-year deal. This move effectively removes the risk of losing a key player and forces Real Madrid to seek alternative options instead of paying a huge fee to break the contract.
In this context, Ibrahima Konate has emerged as a player of special interest to Los Blancos. The 26-year-old defender’s contract with Liverpool has less than a year remaining, and many sources indicate he is leaning towards joining Real Madrid on a free transfer in summer 2026. This scenario is clearly undesirable for Liverpool’s management, who see Konate as a vital part of their defense.
Moreover, Liverpool’s plan to replace Konate is also at risk. Marc Guehi, their primary target from Crystal Palace, has unexpectedly attracted Real Madrid’s attention. If this happens, Liverpool could face a “double blow” in their defensive rebuilding efforts.
Thus, Saliba’s contract renewal has indirectly altered the transfer market landscape. Arsenal retains a key player, Real Madrid turns to Konate, and Liverpool faces a major challenge in safeguarding their squad for the upcoming season.
