Jamie Carragher openly points out Liverpool's weaknesses, stating that Florian Wirtz has yet to find his rhythm and describes his former club as "a complete mess."
The 0-1 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League marked Liverpool’s second consecutive loss within three days, following their slip-up against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Although The Kop still lead the domestic league, legend Jamie Carragher insists that signs of instability have long existed and are now clearly visible.
On CBS Sports, the former defender did not hesitate to criticize his old team: "I don’t feel this is a top team. Liverpool right now aren’t playing football; they’re playing basketball. The game keeps going up and down, and I don’t think top teams play like that." Carragher emphasized that Liverpool, once a disciplined unit last season, has now become "a complete mess" defensively despite adding new star players.
The player he singled out is Florian Wirtz, the £116 million signing expected to bring a breakthrough. However, Carragher was blunt: "Right now, the team’s balance is off, and the most conspicuous name is Florian Wirtz. He has completely failed to settle in. Although he’s young and has plenty of time to develop at Liverpool, I think he should be dropped from the lineup for now. Bring Liverpool back to last season’s style, rebuild confidence and defensive stability. Because at the moment, it’s all just a mess."
These comments came just one day after Wayne Rooney also expressed doubts about Wirtz’s abilities. The pressure on the young German midfielder is mounting as Liverpool’s performances continue to disappoint in both the Champions LeagueandPremier League.
Carragher also pointed out that even in previous wins, Liverpool displayed many issues. "It’s not just because of these defeats, but the performances. This has been evident from day one. Liverpool were dominated by Newcastle in the second half despite their opponents being down to 10 men. Palace last weekend created seven big chances, more than any team in the Premier League this season, while Liverpool are the reigning champions."
As the Premier League and Champions League enter a critical phase, the pressure is on coach Arne Slot to turn things around. The upcoming match against Chelsea this weekend is an opportunity for Liverpool to regain confidence but also a test to prove they are no longer the "mess" Carragher warned about.
