The 18-year-old center-back Giovanni Leoni has confirmed he underwent ACL surgery and started a lengthy rehabilitation process. This came as a huge blow during his debut season at Liverpool.
Joining the “Reds” from Parma for £26 million in August, Leoni was eager to seize his chance. Coach Arne Slot gave the young player a starting spot in the third round of the Carabao Cup, hosting Southampton under coach Will Still.
The Italian defender played impressively until the 81st minute, when he landed awkwardly after a collision and had to be stretchered off. Immediately after the match, Coach Slot admitted the situation “looked very serious.” Later scans confirmed Leoni had torn his ACL and required surgery.
On his personal social media, Leoni also confirmed he had successfully undergone the operation. In a photo taken at the hospital bed, the 18-year-old shared a brief message: “Surgery is done. Thanks everyone for the kind messages. I will be back soon,” accompanied by a red heart emoji and two praying hands.
In the pre-match press conference before facing Crystal Palace, Coach Arne Slot provided an update: “He’s definitely not in good shape, as an ACL injury means a year out. At such a young age, just arriving in a new country, and performing well on his debut… it’s hard to find a positive. But at least, Leoni has many years ahead to come back from such a serious injury.”
Teammates like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who have suffered similar ACL injuries and returned strongly under Coach Arne Slot, believe their experiences will be a vital source of moral support for Leoni.
“That definitely helps, because we have great examples like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, as well as many others worldwide. The positive side is that Leoni is only 18, with plenty of time ahead. The most important thing is the successful surgery, followed by rehabilitation. It’s great that he’s in an environment with teammates who have been through this injury; they can give him positive energy during tough times,” Coach Slot emphasized.
With such a severe injury in his first season, Giovanni Leoni’s Premier League dream is temporarily halted. However, his youth, fitness, and the strong support system at Liverpool are expected to help the Italian center-back return soon and continue his long journey ahead.
