Manchester United confirms signing new Makélélé for £750,000! Hasn't debuted in Colombia yet, reasons behind attracting Sir Jim revealed

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United have signed 17-year-old Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco. He will officially join the Red Devils from Colombian club Fortaleza when he turns 18 in July 2026.

Orozco’s transfer fee is set at $1 million (£750,000), and Manchester United’s lawyers have finalized all contracts. This deal was driven by United’s chief scout for South America, Giuseppe Antonaccio, and is now fully confirmed. The player himself shared Romano’s "Here we go" report on social media and greeted: "Hello, Manchester United."

This player was previously unknown but has been earmarked by Manchester United to rise to fame. An unverified account bearing his name has already gained nearly 4,000 followers. Orozco’s signing aligns perfectly with club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s focus on youth development, aiming to nurture his own Mbappé, Bellingham, and Roy Keane.

Midfield has been a weak spot for Manchester United for years. Currently, in Ruben Amorim’s squad, Casemiro is aging with his contract expiring next year, Ugart hasn’t adapted to the Premier League pace, and Coby Meno has declined after a strong start. Orozco won’t be joining United’s first team directly next year; he will definitely need an extended period with the youth team to adjust to a new continent, country, and style of football.

However, Manchester United hope they have signed a future star with great potential, similar to the club’s past missed opportunity with Moisés Caicedo. Orozco hasn’t yet made his first-team debut for Fortaleza, which currently ranks fourth in the Colombian top division and is contending for the title.

Orozco has performed well for Colombia’s youth national teams, serving as captain of the U17 side and being called up to the U20 squad. United scout Antonaccio believes waiting for him to shine in South American football might cause his price to soar, so bringing him in early is a profitable move.

Limited information shows Orozco was born on July 13, 2008, stands 178 cm tall, and plays as a defensive midfielder. Romano said, "Orozco—remember this name. Manchester United is confident they have discovered a gem, a holding midfielder with excellent strength and huge potential."

Colombian football expert Samuel Vásquez Rivas described: "Orozco is a midfield leader, physically strong, dominating his own half. He is a natural ball winner who often starts organizing play from deep, making him the team’s core. However, although he has developed in Colombia’s youth teams, he hasn’t played professional club football yet, so he’s not very well known in Colombia."

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs provided a more detailed introduction, claiming this signing was confirmed by Manchester United’s transfer director Christopher Viveil, formerly of Chelsea and Red Bull’s system. "This transfer decision was made by Viveil. From a broader perspective, Manchester United’s top management is keen to enter new, developing transfer markets."

Regarding the player’s characteristics, Jacobs said: "Orozco is a defensive midfielder with immense potential. He already displays many admirable traits: tenacity, exceptional speed, strong tackling, and the ability to break through opposing defenses into dangerous areas."

Orozco has been compared to former Real Madrid star Claude Makélélé. "Many like to liken him to Makélélé. In some ways, this is high praise, but this new No. 6 midfielder is even more complete. He not only drops back to defend but also actively pushes forward. From Orozco, you’ll see his incredible change of pace, lightning-fast decision-making, and excellent passing skills—all qualities a No. 6 midfielder should have."

Of course, many players are portrayed as revolutionary signings with invincible futures when they first join Manchester United, but only performance on the pitch will reveal the truth. Since Sir Jim took over the club two years ago, many talented players have been recruited, including defensive midfielders like Sékou Koné from Mali, who was hailed as the new Yaya Touré and Essien upon arrival.
