FIFA has just unveiled the official ball for the 2026 World Cup, the Adidas Trionda, which incorporates AI to help referees make offside and handball decisions faster, promising to be the most advanced ball in the tournament’s history.
FIFA officially presented the 2026 World Cup ball, the Adidas Trionda, marking an unprecedented step by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) directly into its design. This ball not only serves the players but also assists referees in making crucial on-field decisions, from offsides to handballs, with immediate feedback capabilities.
The Adidas Trionda, meaning 'three waves,' retails at $160 (4.2 million VND) and features a color scheme of white, red, blue, and green, representing the three host countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Its design includes the blue star of the USA, the red maple leaf of Canada, and the blue eagle of Mexico, reminiscent of the Brazuca ball used in the 2014 World Cup. Sam Handy, Adidas Football’s CEO, commented: "This is the most visually striking and vibrant FIFA World Cup ball we have ever crafted. A handcrafted masterpiece for the biggest stage, making you want to hold it, admire it, and most importantly, play with it."
The technological highlight of the Trionda lies in the internal chip system, part of Adidas’s latest generation Connected Ball Technology. By combining player position data with AI, this system helps referees make more accurate and quicker offside and handball calls by tracking every touch of the ball. Jude Bellingham, Lionel Messi, and Lamine Yamal appear in promotional images, humorously interacting with the ball. One photo shows the ball much larger than Yamal, though the official size is maintained in reality.
Like all World Cup balls, Adidas guarantees the Trionda offers "optimal flight stability" thanks to its four-panel structure, deep seams, and strategically embossed ridges. However, recent balls, except the 2014 World Cup ball, have been criticized by players for unpredictable trajectories.
Adidas states: "Designed for the world’s biggest sporting event, the Official Match Ball Adidas 2026 is a ball unlike any seen on the pitch before. This year’s ball features the brand’s most advanced Connected Ball Technology, now enhanced with AI, providing real-time data and insights that impact every referee decision as well as tactical analysis throughout all 104 matches. It promises to be the most sophisticated match ball Adidas has ever produced."
The Trionda ball also has its own TikTok account @Trionda, where fans can watch the ball in action from a player’s perspective, creating an unprecedented immersive experience for football enthusiasts.
With AI technology built in, will the Trionda truly change how matches unfold at the 2026 World Cup, or is it just an attractive tech gimmick? What do you think about referees relying heavily on AI data for critical decisions?
