Amorim admits that he will be dismissed if Manchester United does not win and has no intention of resigning or abandoning the 3-4-3 formation! He insists he is not afraid of criticism.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledges that if he cannot quickly lead the team to consistent victories, keeping his position will become impossible. This Saturday, the Red Devils host Sunderland, and if they fail to win, rumors of Amorim’s dismissal will persist throughout the upcoming international break.

Since taking charge, Amorim has spent nearly £300 million on new players, yet Manchester United has lost 3 of their 6 Premier League games this season, winning only twice, and has accumulated just 34 points from 33 league matches over the past year. Although the club insists it still backs Amorim and has not sought a replacement, Amorim himself doubts this claim.

“I’m not worried about that issue, but no one here is naive. We understand that we need to achieve the desired results to have a chance to continue our project,” Amorim said. “Otherwise, at some point, nobody can keep going because this is a very big club with many sponsors and two owners. It’s very difficult; you cannot avoid the results.”

However, Amorim emphasized that he will not resign and that his future will be decided by the board. He also reaffirmed that he will not change the 3-4-3 formation: “Now is not the time to talk but to perform. I want to see my team play the same way, whether we win or lose, we will not switch formations. My biggest issue is that if you say the problem is the formation, my players might believe you, and that would drive me crazy.”

Amorim insists he does not exclusively use the 3-4-3: “I can explain how we play different formations. Against Brentford, we didn’t use three center-backs; I used Luke Shaw, so it was two center-backs paired with a left-back. So, technically, it wasn’t a three-center-back system, though it looks similar, but the positioning is slightly different.”

“In the second half, we played more like a 4-4-2. The problem was that we weren’t good at holding the ball and were too weak without it, which led to our defeat. So, it’s not a consistent 3-4-3. People talk about this system, but I think the focus should be on all aspects of the game.”

He added: “We need to compete with the same approach, intensity, strength, and focus. If we can do that, the formation doesn’t matter. Should the English media decide what I do? That’s impossible, it cannot continue. If you fear losing your job when you have to pay the price, I won’t do that. I just want to carry on. Winning or losing hurts me the most.”

But Amorim also admits that maybe changing the style could improve the team, though he has no plans to do so. “I understand what people think: what if we switch systems, what would Manchester United look like? I don’t know. Maybe this team would win more games. But we certainly cannot win the title just by switching to a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. I talk to the players every day and explain bit by bit what is happening in the team. This squad has played under many systems for years. When you talk about lack of identity or ideas, it’s not about the system but the small details in how we play.”

Amorim says he was not criticized as harshly in Portugal as he has been in England. Since taking over Manchester United last November, he moved from Lisbon to Manchester with his wife and two sons. Despite the pressure from results, the 40-year-old Portuguese describes it all as “child’s play.”

“We enjoy living in England,” Amorim said. “Insults? You don’t know what insults really are! After the team loses, the fans here are more polite than those in my country. So you have no idea what true humiliation is. I’m really happy here, and so is my family. Of course, I hate losing; I hate failure.”
