Facing a supposedly weaker opponent, Nepal, Coach Kim Sang Sik surprised everyone by not including any U23 players in Vietnam's starting lineup for the final round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
While many predicted that Coach Kim would give young players a chance to gain experience, the Korean strategist instead chose a lineup full of seasoned veterans. Vietnam’s team featured the central defensive trio of Duy Mạnh (captain), Bùi Tiến Dũng, and Phạm Xuân Mạnh, with fullbacks Trương Tiến Anh and new vice-captain Cao Pendant Quang Vinh. Notably, goalkeeper Đặng Văn Lâm returned as the starter after nearly a year away from the national team.
The midfield was entrusted to two familiar names: Hoàng Đức and Lê Phạm Thành Long. On the attack, Hai Long and Tuấn Hải supported the striker Tiến Linh.
Meanwhile, U23 players like Khuất Văn Khang, Nguyễn Đình Bắc, Nguyễn Thanh Nhàn, Nguyễn Xuân Bắc, Hiểu Minh, Phi Hoàng, and Nguyễn Nhật Minh were all on the bench. The decision to bench the entire young star group showed Coach Kim Sang Sik’s intent to maintain solidity and avoid risks, as Vietnam needed a win to stay competitive against Malaysia in Group F.
In the second half, Thanh Nhàn and Đình Bắc were brought on and performed quite positively. However, the group of Xuân Bắc, Hiểu Minh, Phi Hoàng, and Nguyễn Nhật Minh, who were called up to the national team for the first time, have yet to make their official debut in the national jersey.
The Korean coach’s decision to field his strongest lineup indicates a preference for stability and experience over experimentation. This choice partly paid off with a 3-1 victory. However, it is likely that some U23 players will be given playing time in the return match against Nepal on October 14 at Thống Nhất Stadium (Ho Chi Minh City) to gain international experience.
With a well-planned squad arrangement and clear objectives, Coach Kim Sang Sik demonstrates caution but also strategic calculation in guiding Vietnam closer to qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
