Has Indonesia not dismissed coach Kluivert because the top official is busy organizing his daughter's wedding?

Coach Patrick Kluivert was unable to guide Indonesia to the 2026 World Cup following their loss in the fourth round of qualifiers, placing the Dutch coach under intense scrutiny.

After Indonesia officially missed out on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, criticism towards Coach Patrick Kluivert intensified sharply. Many fans on social media have united in calling for PSSI to terminate the Dutch coach’s contract promptly.

Facing public pressure, Zainuddin Amali, Vice President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), openly shared his thoughts on Kluivert’s future. He stated that PSSI will not rush any decisions but will rely on a detailed report from the team leader, Mr. Sumardji.

“You can’t just say ‘fire him’ and do it immediately. This is an organization; every decision must be discussed and agreed upon through multiple meetings. We will base our decision primarily on the report from the team leader and the coaching staff,” Mr. Amali emphasized.

When asked about the timing of the review meeting, Mr. Amali said PSSI will wait until Chairman Erick Thohir finishes his personal commitments before convening.

“Chairman Erick Thohir is currently occupied with family matters, as he is organizing his daughter’s wedding on October 18-19. After that, we can thoroughly discuss this issue,” he added.

Additionally, the PSSI Vice President addressed a viral video after the loss to Iraq, in which Coach Kluivert and his staff were accused of not coming onto the field to greet fans and players.

“All those matters are included in the report we are awaiting from Mr. Sumardji. PSSI will conduct a comprehensive review before making any final decisions,” Mr. Amali confirmed.

Currently, Patrick Kluivert’s future remains uncertain. Under his leadership, Indonesia failed to win any match in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers, losing to both Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Experts believe these results may force PSSI to reassess the entire national team project, especially since several recent foreign coaches have struggled to make an impact internationally.
