Liverpool forward Alexander Isak voiced his frustration following Sweden's loss to Kosovo, which almost ended the Scandinavian team's chances for the 2026 World Cup.
In the early hours of October 14 (Vietnam time), Sweden disappointed again by losing 0-1 at home to Kosovo in the UEFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This result dropped coach Jon Dahl Tomasson's squad to the bottom of Group B with only 1 point from 4 matches, putting them at serious risk of early elimination.
Alexander Isak, the Liverpool star, showed clear disappointment witnessing his team's poor performance. After the match, he stated: "It’s terrible. Embarrassing. Another disappointment. We played very badly. The gameplay was ineffective. Both the team and individuals performed below their level. Overall, everything was wrong."
The 1999-born striker believes Sweden is in a severe crisis and insists the entire team must do some serious self-reflection. "The whole team played extremely poorly. We have to take responsibility. Looking in the mirror, no one can say they did well. Not us, not the whole team, and certainly not the coaching staff either. This is truly a crisis situation," Isak added.
When asked why he described the team’s situation as "embarrassing," Isak explained: "One point from four games is unacceptable. I respect Kosovo; they played very well, partly because we allowed them to. They might be stronger than people think, but with the squad we have, we should have done much better."
Meanwhile, Anthony Elanga, the winger from Newcastle United, also apologized to the fans. "We just want to apologize to the Swedish fans who came to support us. Thank you for your support, but sorry for our failure. It’s hard to express how we feel right now."
Given the current situation, Sweden must hope Kosovo loses both remaining matches to have a chance at the 2026 World Cup playoffs—a very slim possibility. Can Alexander Isak and his teammates rally their spirits to salvage this disappointing season?
