Not MU, Coach Solskjaer is about to lead a great European club

Paul Scholes, the Man Utd legend, revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to take charge of a highly successful team in Scotland.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not yet been officially contacted for the head coach position at Ibrox, but he remains unemployed since being dismissed by Besiktas. His most recent job in England was at Man Utd, where the Norwegian coach was relieved of his duties in November 2021 after nearly three years in charge.

Meanwhile, Rangers recently decided to sack coach Russell Martin after only 123 days in charge, following just one win in the first seven matches and falling 11 points behind the league leaders. Steven Gerrard was once considered the ideal candidate for the role, but negotiations between both parties failed to reach a final agreement.

After the deal with Gerrard collapsed, Rangers began exploring other options. While Paul Scholes did not explicitly name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, his close friend and former teammate from the "Class of '92," Nicky Butt, quickly guessed who Scholes was referring to.

In a podcast The Good, The Bad and The Football, Scholes revealed: “I met a friend a few days ago, and he said he was about to have a meeting with Rangers. I’m not sure if the meeting has happened yet, but his name hasn’t been mentioned. He told me privately, so I can’t disclose who it is. I think he didn’t apply himself; rather, Rangers reached out and arranged a meeting in London the next day.”

Butt teased by asking: “Is he the one who scored the winning goal in the Champions League final?” Scholes responded briefly: “No comment”, but he did not deny it either.

Immediately after, Butt said: “You’re talking about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, right?” Scholes just took a sip of tea and calmly replied: “No, I have nothing to comment on.”

Solskjaer’s tenure at Man Utd received mixed reviews. He helped the team overcome a difficult period after succeeding Jose Mourinho and was one of the few managers to lead the "Red Devils" to a runner-up finish in the Premier League. However, he also faced criticism for heavy defeats and a style of play lacking distinct identity.

Rangers are reportedly considering other candidates such as Michael Carrick, Solskjaer’s former assistant at Man Utd, and former Sheffield Wednesday coach Mr. Rohl. The German strategist impressed during Rangers’ selection process and remains on the shortlist. He has not taken on any team since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in July and was approached by Rangers last summer before they chose Martin.
