Fans of the Laos team could not be happy with their side’s showing in the significant loss against Malaysia.
In the first leg against Malaysia on October 9, Laos also played impressively in the first half and held a 0-0 draw. Although they eventually lost 0-3, Malaysia’s lack of 7 naturalized players clearly affected their overall quality. In the second leg, Laos again matched Malaysia evenly during the first 45 minutes.
This time Laos even took the lead in the first half. Due to their strong performance against Malaysia, Laotian fans praised their team. One Facebook user commented: "If Laos dares to attack, you will be rewarded with goals like these" or "Although it’s hard to maintain the advantage, the Laos players gave their best effort."
However, Laos’s advantage did not last long. Again in the second half, Malaysia scored, this time by Faisal Halim in the 60th minute. Just 5 minutes later, Laos conceded a second goal. Clearly, in the second half, Laos’s stamina and focus declined. Then the third, fourth, and fifth goals followed, mirroring the pattern of the first leg.
Laotian fans expressed regret as Laos once again lost ground to Malaysia in the second half: "Once again hope turns into disappointment. Nothing has changed, everything repeats itself." or "We could have lost by an even bigger margin than 5-1 if Malaysia had attacked better; our defense was very poor."
Losing 1-5 overall, the result showed that despite missing 7 naturalized players, Malaysia’s level was still far superior to Laos. This will pose a tough challenge for Vietnam in their rematch scheduled for March 2026.
Clearly, despite their efforts, Laos only managed to meet tactical demands well in the first half. In the second half, their stamina dropped, exposing many defensive weaknesses. With an impressive 4-1 victory over Laos, Malaysia continues to lead Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers with 12 points from 4 wins.
