Estevao is regarded as the most outstanding football talent from Brazil since Neymar. This 18-year-old player joined Chelsea this summer in a £52 million deal and is now on his journey to make his mark in the Premier League.
Born in Franca, a city more famous for basketball than football, Estevao grew up in a religious household, with his father being both a pastor and a former goalkeeper. From the age of four, he was passionate about football, frequently dribbling the ball around obstacles in the church hallway.
From the church to Stamford Bridge
Estevao began his career at Cruzeiro, the club that elevated Ronaldo "Fenômeno" to stardom. In 2018, Estevao attracted attention by signing a sponsorship deal with Nike, becoming the youngest Brazilian ever to sign with the sports giant, surpassing Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.
"At that time, I just thought I would get free shoes every month. I didn't realize how big Nike was worldwide. I only knew Nike because Neymar—my idol—wore Nike shoes when playing for Santos. When they told me I would wear the same shoes as Neymar, I was overjoyed," Estevao recalled.
His playing style, magical left foot, and wearing the number 10 jersey at Cruzeiro earned Estevao the nickname "Messinho," meaning "Little Messi." However, he dislikes this nickname. "I don’t remember who came up with it, but it spread immediately. Neither I nor my family liked it much. Sometimes a nickname like that becomes an unwanted burden. You just want to play football and do what you love, but that label adds pressure that isn’t yours. Luckily, I left it behind when I moved to Palmeiras," Estevao affirmed.
Estevao plays with fearless confidence. After losing the ball or missing a shot, he immediately tries to win it back, experiment, and take risks. "That comes from my dad," Estevao said. The 18-year-old added, "My dad always tells me, 'Never stop being yourself.' If I make a mistake during a match, I don’t have time to dwell on it. You only have a few seconds to react because the ball could be at your feet again at any moment, and you have to be ready to do something with it."
"My dad ingrained that idea in me: stay focused and trust your instincts. If there’s space to beat an opponent, I will do it. If the better choice is to pass, I will pass. I will do what I know and what I’ve been trained to do. I know my capabilities. That’s why mistakes don’t discourage me. I believe in what I trust, and I will keep trying until I succeed," Estevao emphasized.
Estevao’s father, Ivo Goncalves, introduced him to football through amateur matches. From a young age, Estevao always carried a ball with him, letting his imagination run wild on the field, even using bottles as goalposts or shooting against walls. He quickly became a standout talent, surpassing his peers and causing rival parents to complain.

Determined to conquer the Premier League
"I love scoring goals! That was what made me happiest as a child. Whether they liked it or not, I was better than the other boys. Some parents didn’t really like that!" Estevao recalled.
From an early age, Estevao was aware of the importance of learning foreign languages for his football career. "Long before accepting Chelsea’s offer, I told my parents I wanted to learn English. Even though I didn’t know I would come to England, I knew it was a necessary skill for the future," Estevao explained.
He affirmed his desire to quickly adapt in the Premier League: "I want to settle in fast. Playing in the biggest competitions, the Premier League and the Champions League, is a dream come true. The 2026 World Cup is also a goal, but first, I have to prove myself at Chelsea."
A few days after signing with Chelsea, Estevao scored in a 3-1 victory over Juventude and celebrated by mimicking Palmer’s signature "cold shiver" pose. Estevao explained the reason behind this celebration: "Right after signing with Chelsea, I immediately thought of that celebration. Then Palmer messaged me, saying he was looking forward to playing together. His message was in perfect British English—quite hard for me—so I had to use a translation app."
Standing at just 1.70 meters with a slender frame, Estevao’s playing style is full of power. He is a magician with the ball at his feet, easily beating defenders and unleashing powerful shots from any position he chooses.
The Premier League is known for its physicality, but Estevao remains unfazed: "Of course, I know I need to build more strength and toughness at some point, but I’m not overly worried. It will take a careful process to achieve that, but I know what I bring to the pitch, my qualities, and my ability to influence the game. Strength isn’t always the deciding factor. I truly believe in my potential."
With the confident style of a street player and impressive statistics to silence doubters, Estevao has everything needed to shine in the Premier League. A reassurance for coach Enzo Maresca? At least, he won’t have to substitute Estevao at halftime to stop other parents from complaining!
Estevao Willian (born April 24, 2007, in Franca, Brazil) began his career at Cruzeiro (2017–2021) before joining Palmeiras (2021–2024), where he helped youth teams win multiple titles in the U15, U17, and U20 categories, scoring a hat-trick in the 2023 Campeonato Brasileiro U17 final. Estevao debuted for Palmeiras’ first team in December 2023, becoming the fourth youngest player in the club’s history.
On June 22, 2024, Chelsea announced the signing of Estevao. He officially debuted for Chelsea on August 17, 2025. Estevao scored his first goal for Chelsea in October 2025 during a 2–1 victory against Liverpool. He made his debut for the Brazilian national team in September 2024 and scored his first international goal in September 2025.
