The statistical site Footy Rankings has forecasted Vietnam's likelihood of progressing in the 2027 Asian Cup qualification.
Vietnam's national team completed their task in the fourth round of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers with a narrow victory against Nepal.
However, this result is insufficient for coach Kim Sang Sik's squad to claim first place, as Malaysia continued to demonstrate dominance with a crushing win over Laos, firmly securing their top spot in the group.
According to the prediction by the statistical site Footy Rankings, the Malaysian team holds a 94% chance of finishing first, which means securing a place in the 2027 Asian Cup. Meanwhile, Vietnam's probability of overtaking the "Malayan Tigers" is estimated at only 6%.
Specifically, Footy Rankings states: "In theory, Malaysia has almost secured their spot in the Asian Cup. However, due to some uncertainties regarding the results of matches against Vietnam and Nepal, the group standings could still change unexpectedly."
Excluding the "pending sanctions" from the Asian Football Confederation over violations involving the naturalization of seven players, Malaysia currently holds the decisive advantage in the race for the sole ticket to Asia's premier tournament. Therefore, Vietnam must rely on several factors beyond just securing maximum points in the next two matches.
If they earn three points against Laos in the fifth round, coach Kim Sang Sik's team can hope Nepal will stop Malaysia, setting the stage for a decisive final match against Malaysia.
In the event Malaysia defeats Nepal, the "Golden Dragons" must beat Malaysia by at least a four-goal margin to have a chance at a remarkable upset.
In the post-match press conference, coach Kim Sang Sik emphasized that Vietnam needs to improve its finishing in upcoming games to achieve desired results.
The Korean strategist shared: "After the first leg against Nepal, we focused on enhancing our ability to capitalize on chances and our play in the final third. However, today's pitch conditions hampered our performance. In the next training camp, I will continue working on improving players' finishing skills and consider adding new players to key positions."
Vietnam's national team will regroup in mid-November to prepare for their away match against Laos in the fifth round of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
