Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has shown interest in departing Real Madrid following an extended spell as backup to Courtois, aiming to find game time and establish his value.
The future of Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin at Real Madrid has become a hot topic as he reveals his wish to leave the club for more regular playing time after being a “second choice” behind Thibaut Courtois for a long time.
According to Fichajes, Lunin has officially informed Real Madrid’s management of his intention to find a new club in the upcoming transfer window. He believes that at 26 years old, sitting on the bench for too long will hinder his development and cause him to lose form.
Real Madrid does not completely block Lunin’s desire to leave but will only consider offers with a suitable transfer fee, reportedly between 25 and 30 million euros. This significant amount reflects the royal club’s high regard for the Ukrainian goalkeeper, who is contracted until 2030.
Lunin has barely played in La Liga since Courtois fully recovered from injury and returned to goal. The lack of opportunities has left the 26-year-old goalkeeper frustrated. Although he had an impressive spell as starter last season during Courtois’ injury, he still failed to gain full trust from coach Xabi Alonso.
According to British media, Aston Villa is emerging as a potential destination for Lunin, especially with goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez possibly leaving the club. Additionally, Galatasaray (Turkey) is reportedly interested in Lunin’s situation, though no official offer has been made yet.
Lunin is said to only agree to leave if guaranteed a starting role and a clear sporting project. He wants to compete in a high-level environment where he can prove himself and aim to secure the starting spot for the Ukrainian national team in the near future.
If Lunin departs, Real Madrid will need to adjust their goalkeeping plans. The club might consider promoting young keeper Fran Gonzalez from Castilla or seek a temporary option in the transfer market to back up Courtois.
However, if no satisfactory offer arrives, Real Madrid may keep Lunin for another season since he remains a reliable choice whenever Courtois is unavailable.
Although the outcome is still uncertain, it is clear that the relationship between Lunin and Real Madrid is reaching a decisive phase. After years of patient waiting, the Ukrainian goalkeeper seems ready to close his chapter at Bernabeu and revive his career elsewhere.
