Barca in turmoil, top executive faces unprecedented crisis

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is accused by former candidate Victor Font of hiding an 80 million Euro loss and calls for early elections to ensure transparency.

Barcelona is once again engulfed in internal strife as President Joan Laporta faces allegations of financial opacity, just a few years before the club’s presidential election scheduled in 2026. According to former candidate Victor Font, the current management has “concealed an 80 million Euro deficit” and poorly managed several key projects.

Speaking on Catalunya Radio, Font openly criticized: “Last year’s financial report showed a 90 million Euro loss. We requested a review because some assets were misvalued but ignored. This year, the club hid an additional 80 million Euro loss without informing the General Assembly. This is a serious lack of transparency.”

He also criticized the decision to select Limak Group as the contractor for the Spotify Camp Nou project. “They claimed Limak would be faster and cheaper, but that’s not true. Another deception. President Laporta must explain why Limak was chosen despite internal reports warning against it,” Font added. According to him, the plan to return to Camp Nou with 27,000 spectators was also changed due to economic reasons.

Victor Font calls for elections “as soon as possible” to guarantee transparency and restore the decision-making rights of club members. “Members will fight to preserve the social model and ensure the club is managed more effectively,” he emphasized. Font also warned that poor management could impact the sports project under coach Hansi Flick: “I fully trust Flick, but he must be overwhelmed by the disorganization. They let him start the season without a fully registered squad.”

While Laporta insists he is continuing to rebuild Barcelona after a crisis period, the opposition led by Font along with groups like Sí al Futur and Veus del Barça are calling for comprehensive reform. Can Laporta weather this financial storm to protect his position in the 2026 election?
