Acting President of the Malaysian Football Association issues statement as disciplinary penalty nears finalization

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is evaluating sanctions for head coach Peter Cklamovski after comments seen as critical of the association, even though he has apologized publicly and affirmed he meant no disrespect.

Following the 3-0 victory over Laos in the first leg of the Asian Cup qualifiers, Coach Peter Cklamovski attracted attention by openly mentioning FAM during a press conference. He stated: “All the issues with FIFA, the administrative errors, those are FAM’s responsibilities.”

This statement immediately stirred the Malaysian media, who interpreted that the Australian coach openly criticized the national football governing body regarding the incomplete paperwork for seven naturalized players.

Shortly afterward, Cklamovski held a press conference at Bukit Jalil Stadium to apologize and clarify his remarks. He asserted: “I did not intend to insult or criticize anyone. If my words upset anyone, I apologize. I only wanted to talk about the process and difficulties with the documentation.” Nevertheless, the matter was forwarded by FAM to the Disciplinary Committee for proper procedural review.

Acting President Datuk Yusoff Mahadi considers it may have been “a slip of the tongue,” but the organization must still adhere to regulations

Acting FAM President Datuk Yusoff Mahadi confirmed he accepted Cklamovski’s apology but emphasized that all members, including coaches, must comply with the association’s statutes. He stated: “Not only the coach, but all entities under FAM must follow the rules. Anyone who breaches them must be held accountable.” According to Article 91 in FAM’s regulations, any statements damaging the organization’s image can be subject to warnings, fines, or suspension.

Mr. Yusoff added: “I believe this was just a momentary lapse, not an intentional insult. However, FAM has its own rules, and we must respect them. The case will be reviewed by the independent Disciplinary Committee, which will decide the appropriate course of action.”

FAM also explained that the reason for not responding immediately to Cklamovski’s comments was to avoid affecting the team’s morale before the rematch against Laos. “We prioritize the national team’s stability. We do not want to create pressure or disruption before kickoff,” Mr. Yusoff said.

FAM’s Disciplinary Committee is currently examining the head coach Cklamovski’s remarks for possible action

After the controversy settled down, the Malaysian team responded with a convincing 5-1 win over Laos at Bukit Jalil, which helped ease the atmosphere within the squad. Still, public attention remains on how FAM will handle the issue, as it is not only about an individual coach but also a message about discipline and respect for the organization.

If found in violation of the regulations, Coach Peter Cklamovski may face warnings, fines, or even temporary suspension. Although the final decision is pending, this incident will certainly serve as an important lesson for FAM members regarding maintaining professional conduct in football communications.
