As reported by The Times, Liverpool is set to gain a considerable advantage thanks to Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool manager during the 2012-2015 period. He is now leading Celtic in Scotland's top league.
Brendan Rodgers held the managerial position at Anfield between 2012 and 2015, a time when the "Reds" nearly secured a major title Premier League for the first time in over twenty years. In the 2013/14 season, Rodgers’ Liverpool impressed with their fiery attacking style but faltered in the final stages, ultimately watching Manchester City lift the trophy by a narrow 2-point margin.
Following a poor start to the 2015/16 season, Rodgers was dismissed, and Jurgen Klopp took over. What followed is history: Klopp led Liverpool to the long-awaited glories fans had dreamed of for years, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup...
However, a decade after leaving Anfield, Rodgers has inadvertently helped his former club earn profit from what seemed like a minor deal but turned out to be very valuable. Specifically, according to The Times, to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window Celtic (managed by Rodgers) is planning to sign Bobby Clark from Red Bull Salzburg for £6 million. Notably, Liverpool cleverly included a clause in the contract to receive 17.5% of any resale fee, meaning the "Reds" will earn about £1.05 million if this deal goes through.
Regarding Bobby Clark, he is a familiar name to Liverpool fans. He joined the club’s academy in 2021 after developing at Birmingham City and Newcastle United. Clark made a strong impression in the youth teams, was called up by Jurgen Klopp for the 2022 summer tour, and made his official debut in the 9-0 victory over Bournemouth.
Although he couldn’t break into the first team regularly, Clark left his mark by participating in the 2024 English League Cup final, where Liverpool’s youth squad defeated Chelsea 1-0 after extra time. In summer 2024, he transferred to RB Salzburg for £10 million, reuniting with Pep Lijnders, Klopp’s former close assistant.
However, in Austria, Clark has had limited playing opportunities, appearing in only seven matches this season. Salzburg later loaned him to Derby County to gain Championship experience. Therefore, Celtic is now planning to acquire Bobby Clark from Red Bull Salzburg, as Rodgers recognizes the player’s potential.
From Anfield to Celtic Park, the connection between Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool remains strong. This time, that link brings profit to both sides, a rare story in modern football where relationships thought to be over still hold some ties.
