Vietnam's national team has risen 3 places in the latest official FIFA rankings released by the World Football Association.
Following an active period with international matches during the October FIFA Days, the World Football Association announced the official FIFA rankings on the evening of October 17. Accordingly, Vietnam’s team moved up 3 spots from 114th to 111th in the world. Coach Kim Sang Sik's squad gained an additional 13.7 points.
These points came from two victories, 3-1 and 1-0, against Nepal in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Securing a full 6 points helps Vietnam keep close to Malaysia in Group F, trailing the group leader by just 1 point. Before the AFC issues its final decision on Malaysia’s penalty, Vietnam must continue striving to earn maximum points.
Similar to Vietnam, Malaysia also easily secured two wins against Laos in the October matches. Malaysia gained 13.3 points, climbing 5 places and now stands 7 ranks behind Vietnam, although the points gap remains over 20. This is still a fairly safe margin.
Thailand remains the top-ranked Southeast Asian team in the FIFA rankings. The "War Elephants" climbed 5 places after two wins over Chinese Taipei. Thailand is also the only Southeast Asian team inside the FIFA top 100, positioned at 96th in the world. These recent victories in October also greatly boost Thailand’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
While top Southeast Asian teams like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia have climbed in the rankings, Indonesia has received disappointing news. The "Garuda" lost both matches in the 4th round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Iraq, officially ending their chance to participate in the World Cup finals.
Due to these two losses, Indonesia lost 13.21 points, dropping 3 places to 122nd in the world. This is clearly a setback for Indonesia’s ambition to become a leading Asian team and regularly qualify for the World Cup, especially after naturalizing many high-quality players.
