Prior to the showdown with Manchester United, Liverpool was surprisingly called out by ex-Scotland player Don Hutchison to remove newcomer Jeremie Frimpong from the lineup because of his unsatisfactory performance.
Former Scottish midfielder Don Hutchison recently openly called on coach Arne Slot to exclude Jeremie Frimpong from Liverpool’s starting eleven, arguing that the Dutch defender’s form does not meet the club’s standards. Hutchison emphasized that Conor Bradley deserves the starting right-back position given Frimpong’s decline in both form and confidence.
Joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for 35 million Euros with expectations to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong was anticipated to bring speed and explosive attacking ability to the “Reds.” However, things have not gone as planned. In three Premier League appearances, the 24-year-old has played only 79 minutes, without scoring or assisting, while showing several defensive weaknesses.
Hutchison frankly stated: “I would start Bradley right now. Frimpong doesn’t meet the criteria to be in the starting lineup. He constantly loses possession, makes poor passes, and clearly lacks confidence.”
In reality, Frimpong is struggling to adapt to the English football environment, which demands higher defensive skills and tactical discipline compared to the Bundesliga. Under coach Slot, the full-back’s role is not only attacking but also maintaining a tight defensive position, something Frimpong has yet to achieve.
Meanwhile, Conor Bradley, who impressed strongly last season during Liverpool’s personnel crisis, has demonstrated a good balance between defense and attack, leading many experts to believe he deserves a chance.
Liverpool is entering a crucial phase with a congested schedule in both the Premier League and Champions League. If Frimpong does not improve soon, he may be sidelined for a long period, making way for Bradley, who is expected to bring more stability on the right flank.
Nevertheless, coach Arne Slot affirmed that he will make selections based on performance rather than reputation, giving every player an opportunity to prove themselves during the intense upcoming period.
