L'Équipe reviews the disappointing new signings of this season: Wirtz costing €125 million with zero goals, David and Jocic underperforming.

Following the October international fixtures, the top five leagues resumed action. Liverpool lost 1-2 at home to Manchester United, extending their losing streak to four games in all competitions. Juventus suffered a 0-2 loss at Como, and Arsenal edged Fulham 1-0 away with a corner kick goal. The new players for Liverpool, Juventus, and Arsenal did not show standout performances.

French media outlet L'Équipe has published an article reviewing the high-profile signings in the big five leagues over the past two months whose performances have fallen short of expectations, including players like Wirtz, David, and Jocic.

  • Wirtz: This summer, he joined Liverpool from Leverkusen for €125 million. So far this season, he has played 11 matches across all competitions without scoring and has only one assist, becoming a "zero-one-one" player. Klopp is hesitant to bench Salah, whose form has dropped sharply and whose style is difficult, causing tension in Liverpool's dressing room. Liverpool’s new signings are definitely challenging Salah's status, with Ekitic making way for Isak as the main contender.
  • David: David moved to Juventus on a free transfer from Lille this summer. The French striker has completely lost his scoring touch in Serie A, managing just 1 goal and 1 assist in 8 appearances across all competitions so far. Juventus hoped David would lead their attack, but his output is far below Vlahović’s, putting the team in a difficult position. Juventus originally planned to offload the highly paid Vlahović, who earns €12 million after tax annually; David’s after-tax salary is also around €6 million, which is near top-tier wages in Serie A.
  • Jocic: This summer, he joined Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon for €65.8 million. So far this season, he has played 11 matches with 3 goals and no assists. Considering Arsenal’s status as Premier League leaders, Jocic’s tally of only 3 goals as the main striker is wholly inadequate. Arsenal expects Jocic to consistently score and stabilize the attack, but his prolific form in the Portuguese league has not translated to the Premier League, which reflects on his ability.

One question arises: why is the summer’s record signing Isak not included? The Swedish forward transferred from Newcastle to Liverpool for €145 million. So far this season, he has 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 matches across all competitions. Transfermarkt recently updated his Premier League market value to €140 million, which is a baffling valuation.

Finally, a thought-provoking question: who do you think is the worst-performing new signing in the big five leagues this season?
