A major controversy has erupted in Spain after La Liga confirmed plans to hold the match between Villarreal and Barcelona on American soil.
According to the organizers’ plan, the Villarreal vs Barcelona match in round 9 of La Liga will be played in Miami (USA) instead of Villarreal’s home stadium. This decision is seen as an attempt to expand La Liga’s international influence, but it has faced strong opposition from several clubs.
Many clubs argue that playing at a neutral venue removes the home advantage and distorts fairness in the title race. In protest, La Liga teams collectively paused for 15-20 seconds at the start of their weekend matches to show unity against President Javier Tebas’s decision.
Speaking to the press, Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal openly expressed his frustration regarding this issue: “In my opinion, this is a clear distortion of the league. It means teams are no longer competing under equal conditions.”
The Spanish star believes that taking a domestic match abroad breaks the fairness structure that La Liga has built over many decades.
“We need to be fair to players, clubs, and the league itself. If we want to maintain football’s integrity, things like this cannot happen,” Carvajal emphasized.
Not only Real Madrid, but several other clubs are also considering submitting formal complaints to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Experts worry that La Liga’s decision could set a dangerous precedent, opening the door for more matches to be “exported” abroad in the future for commercial reasons.
Meanwhile, President Javier Tebas continues to defend the stance that this is “a strategic move to promote La Liga’s image worldwide”. However, the wave of opposition shows that clubs are unwilling to sacrifice sporting fairness for commercial gain.
Clearly, the decision to move the Villarreal - Barcelona match to the USA is not just about logistics, but a matter of principle, where clubs must speak up to protect the competitive essence of Spanish football.
