Coach Shin Tae Yong sends a signal to the Indonesian Football Association

Following the departure of Patrick Kluivert, Indonesia’s national team is expected to reconnect with Shin Tae Yong, the Korean coach who confirmed he would give priority to leading Indonesia if invited.

Former Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae Yong recently declared in an interview that he would prioritize returning to lead Indonesia if he received an official offer from the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).

Currently, the Korean coach is a free agent after being dismissed by Ulsan Hyundai FC two weeks ago. Coincidentally, the Indonesian national team has also parted ways with coach Patrick Kluivert, sparking speculation about a possible reunion between PSSI and Shin Tae Yong, who made a significant impact during his tenure from 2019 to 2025.

In an interview with Goalpost, Shin Tae Yong shared his special affection for Indonesian football: “If I receive an invitation, I will definitely consider it. My principle is always to be open to good opportunities, but my heart still leans towards Indonesia. Even if other places offer more attractive proposals, if Indonesia shows sincerity and determination, it will remain my first choice.”

However, Shin Tae Yong admitted that he has not received any official contact from PSSI since he left the head coach position earlier this year. “From Indonesia? No, not yet. I haven’t received any calls or proposals, absolutely none,” he stated frankly.

Under Shin Tae Yong’s leadership, the Indonesian national team made significant progress, especially in tactics and fitness. The 54-year-old coach helped the "Garuda" rise 48 places in the FIFA rankings, moving from 173rd to 125th, marking one of the most impressive development phases in the country’s football history.

After PSSI and Kluivert parted ways, Shin Tae Yong’s name immediately surfaced among fans as the top candidate for the head coach position. Given his strong bond with Indonesia and the legacy he left behind, a reunion between the two is currently the most anticipated topic in Southeast Asian football.
