Mason Mount is emerging as the outstanding new signing for MU this season.

It is not Matheus Cunha—the £62.5 million star signing from Wolves—but Mason Mount who is becoming the real new recruit for MU.

When MU brought in Matheus Cunha last summer, many assumed the Brazilian would become the offensive centerpiece and a vital part of Amorim’s attacking strategy. Yet, Cunha has failed to make any mark so far: 9 matches in all competitions with no goals, no assists, and a missed penalty that contributed to MU's exit from the League Cup against Grimsby.

Conversely, Mason Mount—once considered a "transfer flop" during Erik ten Hag’s tenure—is making a powerful comeback. After two seasons plagued by injuries, the English midfielder has quietly impressed Amorim with his professionalism, tactical flexibility, and determined attitude.

In the recent 2-0 victory over Sunderland, Mount stood out with a goal and a comprehensive performance in both attack and pressing. He moved dynamically, took part in organizing play, and initiated many fast counterattacks—the style of football Amorim wants to see.

"As a coach, you always want a player like Mount in your squad," former defender Phil Jones commented. "He doesn’t just score or assist, but also does all the quiet work: sprinting 40 meters to press, supporting defense, encouraging teammates. Mount leads through actions, not words."

Mount was once labeled a "coach’s favorite"—from Lampard to Tuchel to Ten Hag—but with Amorim, it is his dedication and discipline that earn his trust. Rio Ferdinand also agrees: "Mount may not always have the best ball control, but you always get energy, fighting spirit, and organization from him. That’s the kind of player every coach wants."

Mount is gradually taking over Cunha’s place in the starting eleven.

Indeed, Mount never avoids responsibility. After two seasons struggling with injuries, he persisted in training, working hard to regain his touch and fitness. Amorim once said about him: "I love him. Just looking into Mount’s eyes, I can tell how much he desires success."

In April this year, Mount repaid that confidence with a brilliant performance: scoring twice against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semi-final and earning a starting position in the final against Tottenham. Although MU lost 0-1, Amorim did not regret his decision. To him, Mount exemplifies the spirit and willpower he wants his team to follow.

In the 3-4-2-1 formation used by Ruben Amorim, Mount is the ideal player: able to play as an attacking midfielder, drop deeper to assist, or press wide. He played in a similar system under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, which helped him quickly understand tactical requirements.

"Maybe the coach trusts me because I am familiar with this system," Mount said. "I know what he expects from each position, and I always try to bring energy to the team, being the first to press."

Compared to Cunha—who is still trying to find his role—Mount shows much greater stability and clarity. The Brazilian recently admitted he doesn’t know his best position: "I was once a midfielder, then a forward, adapting to a 4-3-3. Now I see myself as versatile, but sometimes that versatility confuses others."

While Cunha is still searching for his identity, Mount has already found his place in Amorim’s system: a crucial link who both creates play and ensures defensive coverage from a distance.
