Milan should not rush to talk about the Scudetto

Throughout the past week, both AC Milan and Inter Milan were regarded as the leading candidates for the championship this season, but by the weekend, they forced a reevaluation of that view.

Inter has never disappointed its supporters as much as it has this season. Losing to Udinese might have been an accident, losing to Juventus was just unlucky despite a positive approach, but the defeat to Napoli, despite being superior in all aspects, was an inexcusable regression. Their streak of seven consecutive wins with only two goals conceded suddenly became meaningless after a total collapse at the Diego Maradona stadium. With their attack in great form and defense solid, Inter was expected to dominate a wounded Napoli, but they showed a completely different side. They were clearly outperformed by Napoli in terms of competitive spirit. Complaints about a controversial penalty only deepened Inter’s shame, especially since their opponent was missing their top star in the match.

This defeat once again highlighted coach Cristian Chivu’s lack of experience when facing strong teams. A club with championship ambitions cannot afford to lose these crucial "six-point" matches, yet Inter lost both to Juventus and Napoli. History proves that champions rarely lose more than four matches in a season, but Inter has already lost three in just eight games, equaling their total losses in the entire 2020-21 season and exceeding by one the losses in the 2023-24 title-winning campaign. Although it is too early to know the full impact of these three defeats, the path ahead will clearly be very tough for the Nerazzurri. In theory, they can only afford to lose one more match in the remaining 30 games if they want to claim the title.

AC Milan’s red half also caused great disappointment by drawing 2-2 at home against bottom-ranked Pisa. In fact, that point was more of a gain than a loss, as Milan struggled to equalize late after Pisa overturned the score to lead 2-1 until the 90+3 minute. Leao scored very early, signaling a return to form for the star, but Milan lacked passion, showed disrespect to their opponent, committed many individual errors, and ultimately paid the price. Milan has always struggled against teams that defend deeply, especially when lacking their best creative players like Christian Pulisic, but playing attitude is also very important.

Milan is also suffering from a wave of injuries, having been able to name only 7 substitutes in the last two matches (with a maximum allowed of 12). Their advantage of a more relaxed fixture schedule compared to main rivals is meaningless when short of players, and this is clearly something the Rossoneri leadership must address in the upcoming winter transfer market.
